A petition was read from the merchants
and professional men of the town praying
that as the Electric Light Company has
been asked to raise its polesonJosephine
street entailing considerable expense, the
Council grant a franchise to' the Company
for ten years, the company to light the
town hall, clerk's office and Council cham-
ber free of charge and to guarantee lights
to the town at rates similar to those pre-
vailing in other towns. having a well regu-
lated systk r; -of electric lights. Mr. Green
was heard on the matter and on motion
the petition waw referred to the Fire,
Water, and Light Committee to report at
the next Council meeting.
Jas. Angus was heard re Henderson's
cattle impounded. Question referred back to
Executive Committee.
By-law 289, 1898, repeating by-law 288,
1896 and appointing W. F. t3rockeushire
Collector for balance of the year was read
and passed.

' -On Thursday morning Alex. Icing, an
employee in Ch'ipman's tannery, was
carrying a large bottle of sullahurio acid
across from the Hymen tannery, when
the bottle broke spilling the acid, a part of
it coming in contact with Itis right ',beck
and severely horning it. The front of his
clothes was saturated 'with the dangerous
liquid; he immediately threw off his coat,
vest and overalls but in doing ac his hands
and right arm were badly burned. In a
short time the uiecarded garments were
literally eaten up,and bad it not been that

Guy Brothers' Minstrels appeared in the
opera house last evening before a good
house, and the audience was as well pleas•
ed and as good natured as it was large.
Many ladies were present, and nothing
that bore the suspicion of the objectionel
was oa the programme, The overture was
well staged and was first class, the music
being good and tate jokes new, In the
second part some exeeedingty clever speci-
alities were seen. Vanerson on the horiz-
ontal bars was a wonder. His work was
never equalled here and the audience gave
hien great applause. The musical artists
Iieating and Forestner, gave pleasing per:

anadsing feature by the colored "intruder"
G. R. Gay. XtfeDonald the contortionist,
and Schofield the leggier, are stars in their
lines, and are not to bo surpassed in the
world. The performance taken as a whole
was decidedly good, better than before and
gave unbounded satisfaction to the audi-
ence. The Guy Brothers have done a
greet deal to elevate the minstrel stage.

afternoon on a charge of stealing sheep
skins from W, J. Chapman. He appeared
before W. P, ,Broekenshire, ifagtstrate,
Saturdaytnorning, his counsel asking for

granted. As bail was not obtained, Short -
reed remained in custody over Sunday.
When the case was called, W. J. Chapman,
who was to have appeared against the
pritioner, stated that he had no evidenee to
proceed with the ease and Snortreed was
dismissed.
