On Satnrday night last about ten o'clock an alarm of fire was given and on investigation it was found that the large furniture factory of Dowling .L• Leighton had had a nar- row escape from destruction. It appears that when the nightwatch- man, Mr. Frank hires, was making his rounds tlho lfnztern he carried ex- plc'ded in thefinishing room of the chair department. The inflammable material in the room at once took fire burning Bird severely. He at once gave an alarm and those first on the spot luckily were aware that cans of extinguishing fluid wore always kept in all parts of the factory and at once dashed the contents of several vessels upon the flames with the re- sult that the fire was subdued with- out any material damage being done. The engine was ready for work in a very few minutes but fortunately the services of' the firemen was not regnired. "The hygiene value of the bath to people in ordinary good health is very greatly increased by a most vigorous rubbing," writes Dr. Cyrus Edson in diseussing "When and How to Bathe," in the June Ladies' Monne Journal, "With the flesh brushes and gloves, the rough Turk- ish towels and other appliances -- one of the most valuable is the tnarrow band of toweling—this can bo administered with the greatest ease, and it should always be thorough—in fact, it is difficult to overdo. Its effect is to restimulate the reaction from the hath, and bring the vessels and nerves of the skin, into a healthy, vigorous condi- tion. One of the most valuable baths to those in whom the organs of the lower part of the trunk are weak is the hip bath. In this the bather is seated in the bath, and the water covers the body as high as the waist. If the water be cold, that is, if we desire to stimulate the organs by the shock, a towel wet with cold water must be folded turban -wise • on the head. The duration of the bath is from fifteen to twenty minutes, and its effect is immediate. The baths excite the vasomotor nerves of the abdominal organs. Their use should be prescribed by a physician. As long as the result of bathing is not to weaken the bather we can practically say a person. cannot, when in health, bathe too much. I have spoken of the hygienic value of the bath, but I have said nothing of the physical pleasure to he derived from it. Every one knows the delicious feeling of cleanliness, the glow of the skin, and the general sense of robust health which follow a good bath. What is more delight- ful than the exhilaration of a swim in salt water ? These results are a part of the experience of all, but it must not be forgotten that in these very physical pleasures there is a distinct hygienic effect. ONE HONEST MAN.
