{ 'arm. Notes, If yaws are heavy milkers, be sure to leo to their udders a few days before farrowing time, if they are showing signs of caking or be- ceming hard, a light dose of physic will prove beneficial. Many la. good sow hes been rendered useless as a breeder through leek of a little at tention at this period, * * * If you have had a supply of raats' anis past winter for your pigs, you bave doebtless found them a grand .help in carrying the brood sows through winter cheaply; but do not overdo it. Remember that too many roots, feet right up to farrowing time, have a tendency to make the litters come weak. Ease up z little on the the roots, then, a couple of weeks before farrowieg, Oats are cheap this spring, and a few crushed oats will be 'a useful addition to the sow's nations. * * * One very common source of loss to pig -breeders is through sows lying on their ;young, more especially if the sow is heavy, or clumsy. The best way of guarding against such as cidents is to place a rail around the pen, about eight inches from the floor, and the same distance from the wall.. If the sow be then bedded with a small quantity of cut straw, eo that she cannot 1111 up the space behind the rail with her bedding, the little pigs will have a chance of running beneath and behind the rail and so escaping being crushed against the wall by the sow. When a pig has been lain upon and is not killed .outright, the best remedy we know of is hot water, used as follows: Take a pail of water as hot as ever the hand can boar, and immerse the pig in it all but its head, lifting• it in and out rapidly, but allowing ' it to remain in a little longer each time, rubbing well afterwards with a wisp TUE WLN UItA1%1. TIMES, M.A Y 8, uu.)t;. GODERICII, A. Now Motive Power, Dast week the frame foundation fur the saw -mill was placed, and this week a large nutllber of men is en- gaged on the building, The past week a large clultutity of its lnachitt- ery and some timber were unloaded beside the railway track, The congregation of Victoria St. Methodist church has selected Rev. T. E. Harris, of Melbourne, Elgin Co. Its the ruturo minister. As the Rev. gentleman has accepted Victoria's in -1 vitattion, the appointment only need3 the eonfirmation of the stationing I committee. Among those winning 'the degree of M. A. at the examination in Arts and Divinity at Queens University, we are pleased to find the name of A.M. Robinson, son of W. R. of here. The news of the young gentleman's success will be received with pleasure by our people. Engineer Smith and D. Mclvor, while sounding ori the beach and pier last week, found that the large quan- tity of sand. that has come on the beach recently must have come from near and around the piers, as at the present tune there is no bar across the harbor entrance, and at ,placesa few hundred feet from the beach, t where there was only five feet of water, there is now eight or nine. It seems that the lengthening of the piers has done away with the harbor bar. The soundings taken show over 15 feet of water front lake to doek, but close to the south pier the depth in some plaees is two feet less. AN INVENTION wFxlOii DOES AWAY IWITII 'I'In USE OF PROPELLERSPROPELLERSON VESSELS Naval engineers are very machmachinterested in the results of at forth- coming experiments at the Brooklyn Navy yard of a machine designed to send a vessel through the water without the aid of propellers. The test is to be glade by order of Seor'etary Herbert, and the device will, by election of the inventor, be fitted into a 28 -foot boat, although the department would prefer the use of a 104 -foot boa,, which is not at the yard, By burning oil, gas is generated, There it is ignited by an electric spark. The force of re. peated explosions drives the piston up and down. As the result of an explosion a jet of air is blown out of a tube in the stern of the vessel and the resistance of the water causes the boat to move forward. The engineering experts say that the invention, which has been tried privately, does not give much promise of usefullness in naval warfare, but the engineer claims that it will be of great service in orpedo boats and • that with his device they can bo driven noiselessly a tld at a phenomenal rate of speed. It has been held by hygienists that the wrinkles on a woman's face are often due to impure air, a sense, a cause of which is not infrequently the exclusion of sunshine. The skin owes its beauty, say,, Science Siftings to the nerves which controls the. line blood vessels of the surface, whose work lends glow and clearness to the fact. The nerves, in turn, owe their sensitiveness to the air, which is our chief nutriment, inhailcd by gallons hourly, and should be pure and invigorating. 'When the nerves are deadened by close air the fine muscles lose their tone, the tissue of the face shrinks, and these shrink - lugs become wrinkles. D., in his paper to young Wren, in lay Ladies' Horne Journal, discusses "Shall We Send Our Boy to College?" answering the query with the esser. tion, "That depends a great deal on the boy." Ile annount:tas himself to be a strong believer in the college, but holds that "it might not be hest for bins [only boy] to go to college; it alight not he best for the eommun- ity that be should. College can fit a man for life, and, also, itcan unfit hint. There are styles of education that disqualify the student for doing what he is competent to do, without qualifying hila to do that which he might like to do, but for which he lacks, and always will lack, the pre- requisites. * * * As a general principle, the more a man knows the better, bat so long as the present order of things continues a great amount of every ordinary work will require to be done; and ordinary people will do ordinary work better than extraordinary people will, and be a great deal more comfortable while doing it. Hordes of both sexes are entering college for the simple reason that they do not enjoy com- monplace things. The result is that common place things are left undone and uncoinnlonplace things fare still worse. Agriculture is the material basis a nation's strength and pros- perity. We could dispense with either lawyers, doctors or n)inislers better than we could with farmers. Probably we would not quarrel if there were fewer students of the law and would note be sick so much it there were fewer students of medi- cine, and would not be so wicked if there were fewer Students of theology.
