Editor Country Gentleman—In Many localities early potatoes are more profitable than a late crop. Consumers will frequently refuse good Bound old potatoes at 40 to 50 tents per bushel, when they will pay the same sum for a peck of new potatoes. I also notice that some of the early potatoes shipped to our market are of inferior size. Early home-grown potatoes of good quality and fair size are in demand in any local market, Not all potato soil is adapted for an early crop. Neither is all potato 'climate suitable for early maturity. The nature of the soil must be such that it admits of early tillage in the spring. The physical condition of the soil must be such that it generates and retains heat. The third or work it. thoroughly with a disk reason is; that the longer tlie potato harrow. The largest yield of Po- tatoes we ever had was on ground that was manured and plowed yery shallow in the fall. I noticed this fall that one of our most successful early potato growers ploVed his ground twice at an inter- val of about a month. The last -plowing was as deep as could be— perhaps not as deep as the soil per- mits, but as deep as"the plow's capa- city. Early potatoes are planted annually on this soil, followed by some market crop. The potato tops in this patch always show that there is someting in the soil that produces an unusual growth. Yet this rapid ratile growth is not to be desired. in early potatoes. It is all right if no destructive frost comes. Last year this gardner's potato patch was eona- pletely frozen down, while others of Moderate growth were but slightly inj ured. We make a fatal mistake by judg- ing the value of manure by the size of the vines. We must have healthy normal growth of tops. At the same time manure must produce tubers. From my experience .1 believe that wood ashes in canjunction with JStable manure pays. Commercial fertilizer on our soil has no percep- tible .effect on the yield of potatoes. The kind of fertilizer used, whether home made or commercial, may to a certain extent determine the hardi- ness of the plant. - The earlier tbo planting, the better the soil should be prepared. A young animal in cold and stormy weather needs better attention . than in the pleasant summer days. When the -temperature of the soil is between 80 and 40 degrees, plants outlet as readily obtain nourishment as when the soil is warmed to GO degrees and upwards. Fence the necessity of helping the plants by thorough pul- verization. Such work can only be properly done when the soil is in a right condition. Early potato rais- ers are frequently baffled at this point—theground being too wet when potatoes should be planted. If we have three or four days' clear weath- , er, we can partly overcome this hindrance by using the cultivator or double shovel plow. Let the calti- vator run about two inches deep the first time. This loose soil wilt soon dry out. Next cultivation, go deep- er. If we use an iron double shovel plow nr a two -horse cultivator, we can stir the soil as deep as with a two -horse plow. Ily adopting this 'elan instead of using a break- Mg- •. 4 plow, the . soil gradually, out as the depth of the plowing! grosses. The disk harrow or two' se eultivator could be profitably d even if we break the ground th a two horse plow. Work the face soil as deep as the tools will then turn it over with the " Tho Common People," As Abraham Lincoln called them, do not care to argue about their, ailments, 'What they want is a medicine \Nit will cure them. The fourth reason is, being planted deep, they develop a greater root system. This large root system gives them a greater capacity to obtain plant food, and also prepares them to resist drouth better than shallow planting. Plant as early in the spring as the soil permits. We must anticipate that now and then our seed in the soil may freeze; also the vines cut down to the ground by- the frost.— .A. Shirer in Country Gentleman. PHYSICIANS or. While we bear considerable of farmer and dairymen grumbling about the lack of profits in their business, we see occasionailly the repoits of enterprising business men going into farming on a large scale to make money. The question natur- ally arises Is the blame not with the farmer ? If his methods are not the best he must expect to fail. Business men do it, and there is- no reason why farmers should not. Conditions often change rapidly in dairy communities, but the fact never changes that good milk and its products have always a value of their own. Heavy guns have long been fired by electricity, but electrically ex- ploded small arms have not hitherto come within the sphere of the in- ventor. It is hard to see wherein an electrically actuated rifle can, for all! praetical purposes, be an improve- ment on the extremely efficient ex- ploding mechanism with which arins of precision are now fitted, but ,the designer of a rifle in which the cart- ridge is exploded by electricity claims that in this method, thereis none of the flashing out of the pow- der common with the merely percus- sive hamther, and all the powder is consumed, to the manifest improve- ment of the penetrative power of the bullet, A battery is inserted. in the stock, with wires running to a strip of metal on the one hand. and the hammer—whieh is fitted on the upper part of the trigger—on the other. The metal strip makes con- tact with the metal .beise of the shell. A pin, which runs into the cartridge, has its rounded head projecting slightly beyond the base of the cart- ridge. Between this and the point of the hammer is a plate studded with a pointed head, which lies elose to the cartridge, As the trigger is pulled the hammer flies forward, striking the plate, whose pointed head is driven on to the projecting head of the eartridge pin. This spark thus caused within the cart- ridge explodes the powder. A young queen that has defective wings so that she cannot fly should be destroyed. She will be a drone layer. Bees will destroy an old worn-out queen, but never except when the conditions are favorable for raising a new queen. To place honey on the market in the best possible shape it would be taken from the, hives before it is spoiled by the bees. A strong colony is always proof against robbers. See that all have good laying queens and young broods in the hives. Care in this respect in good season will avoid much loss. A moderate flow of honey during the fall months puts the bees in good condition to withstand the winter; brood raising is kept up and a good supply of boos is produced which will be more apt to go through the winter successfully.
