EDITORIAL NOTES.
m T 7!Z'k'`ItI{i,'".0 IMPORTS.understood that the proposed Caron -Ito take. care of themselves? There
was no protection to brain, to agri-
culture, to skill,that had brought
about the result he had mentioned,
He olid not believe a word. of this
cry of inferiority in manufacturers;
lie did not believe it was true.
When the Corn Law agitation was
at its height in England, the Duke of
Richmond declared that the repeal of
these laws would shake the throne,
would cripple the church, and
plunge a happy and contented
people into misery, confusion and
anarchy. What had been Britain's
iritimphal progress since that time?
Her workmen to -day were better paid
and better fed than ever. (Ap-
plause).
HER FLAG FLOATED HIGHER AND
BOLDER
than ever in her history. (Rousing
cheers.) The 'Liberals of Canada
had set their faces toward the rising
sun of commercial freedom and
rational development, (cheers) they
preached no doctrine of despair.
They were the pioneers of civil and
religions liberty ; they had emanci-
pated the oppressed, and would still
achieve similar results. The true
policy for Canadians was to have
confidence in themselves, to trust
God and keep their political bands
clean, to be courageous and stead-
fast: Should they be like the chil-
dren of Israel who wandered forty
years in the wilderness, because they
believed the false report of thespies
and were afraid to go up against the
sons of Anak? No, they should go
up and possess the land. (Cheers.) GENTS'
The country's affairs had been mis- G
managed. Would the Bank of
Montreal shareholders trust the
Cabinet with the conduct of their —AT—
affairs? No. It was for the Liberals,
the young Liberals, to trust in the GEO O G A R R'
Chapleau-Pelletier-Ives combination
in its party is no good, that though
it will remain with the party in
Quebec district, "if Caron, the
organizer, has the salve success as
he had in 1891, he can. begin right
off to measure the extent of the
disaster that awaits us, And it con-
tinues ; "Let no one at Ottawa
believe that the projected combine.,
tion will satisfy (or save) us, and will
have the effect of rallying all the
Conservative forces. Far from. it.
On the contrary, it will deepen the
chasm in the. party which. has been
the work exclusively of Sir A. F,
Caron. He can carry the news to
Ottawa after the general election if
he is not returned to stay at home."
Ominous language, this, and from a
Conservative paper.
TORONTO Globe :—Mr. P. Mac-
donald, M. P. for East Huron, has
completed a most interesting series
of articles, in the Wingham Times,
descriptive of a trip over the Cana-
dian Pacific Railway to the western
coast of British Columbia. Like all
visitors to Canada's great west, Mr.
Macdonald has been impressed' with
its grand. possibilities, and, like all
keen observers, be has seen how the
restrictions imposed from Ottawa
hamper and impede the natural de-
velopment of the country. The
writer concludes with n warm eulogy
of the the Canadian Pacific Railway,
its excellent condition, efficient
service and courteous officials. Mr.
Macdonald has the agreeable faculty
of condensing extensive information
on many topics into compact form,
and presenting it into it in pleasant,
readable style.
