When the Corn Law agitation was at its height in England, the Duke of Richmond declared that the repeal of these laws would shake the throne, would cripple the church, and plunge a happy and contented people into misery, confusion and anarchy. What had been Britain's iritimphal progress since that time? Her workmen to -day were better paid and better fed than ever. (Ap- plause). HER FLAG FLOATED HIGHER AND BOLDER than ever in her history. (Rousing cheers.) The 'Liberals of Canada had set their faces toward the rising sun of commercial freedom and rational development, (cheers) they preached no doctrine of despair. They were the pioneers of civil and religions liberty ; they had emanci- pated the oppressed, and would still achieve similar results. He can carry the news to Ottawa after the general election if he is not returned to stay at home." Ominous language, this, and from a Conservative paper. TORONTO Globe :—Mr. P. Mac- donald, M. P. for East Huron, has completed a most interesting series of articles, in the Wingham Times, descriptive of a trip over the Cana- dian Pacific Railway to the western coast of British Columbia. Like all visitors to Canada's great west, Mr. Macdonald has been impressed' with its grand. possibilities, and, like all keen observers, be has seen how the restrictions imposed from Ottawa hamper and impede the natural de- velopment of the country. The writer concludes with n warm eulogy of the the Canadian Pacific Railway, its excellent condition, efficient service and courteous officials.
