Our next weekend in the city isn't going to include Tuk. And probably you've gathered from the foregoing taht if that's the case, there won't likely be another visit to the city for some time. The sympathy ' is . directed at dogs' who live in cities. : My dog tried it for three days over the Easter weekend and it almost killed him. We went to 'Kitchener to visit my' sister, the dog, my husband . and I. Becau se he doesn't see us • all week, the cig, called Tuk, (short for Tuktoy aktuk, which means place where the deer meet, according to Don Harron) claims a lot of our attention on weekends. We feel heartless leaving him at home.' As our many exifriendi who've been visited by us, trailing him; -will tell. you, Besides we couldn't bribe anyone to dog sit. He shakes so, hard whenever he goes to the vetsi.- that leaving him there for -the weekend would have meant he'd. shiver and shake himself away to nothing by the time he was retrieved on Sunday. And my sister wanted to see him, or thought she did. At -first everything -was okay. He seemed to look on the, walk up four flights of stairs and a patrol around her two bedroom apartment as a novel experience. But the thrill wore off. Dogs don't like apartments. Dogs have a sense of territory taht is offended by apartments. Hovv do you 'ex'plain to a dog who'd get praised at home if he growled when he heard someone in 'the house at 3 a.m. that whoever is out .in the apartment corridor at that hour has every right to be there, that he or she lives there? That footsteps on the apartment stairs don't necessarily mean taht someone is coining to see you and should be announced with series of a barks. You cant just turn off that carefully nurtured watchdog instinct when you spend a weekend in an apartment. - Tu -k tired of the visit, the city and all- of us. A two bedroom apartment on the fourth floor just doesn't appeal to a dOg the way a house with a porch, a deck' and an acre of places to look for rabbits and,•groundhogs does. At home he goes in and out as often as he can persuade one of us to do• door duty. But nobody in that Kitchener, apartment would hun go up and down and in and- out -on his own. Busy city streets down there, we tried to tell hint My sister'4s place has a balcony but he couldn't see over the wall around it and he didn't like staying out there alone. She didn't have any walls that were cool enough for a dog to back up against. At home he has lots of drafty, Cool corners to choose from if he has to stay inside. Anyway, ,aft er half a day in the apartment Tuk started to look like a cornered animal in a zoo. Things didn't improve much when we went out. How. does a dog urd,,to open fields adjust to postage stamp size lawns and parks& And it's hard for a dog to walk down a city street:-There are so many strange smells and germs and garbage heaps to stop and smell that he doesn't make any progress at all. ' To say nothing of the exotic city diseases he could pi& up...at home he's pretty well developed immunity to the local germs. - He had to be on a leash all the time, which is hard for a dog used to running as fast as he possibly can to take 'hard cement sidewalks must have hurt a'sore leg which lie sprained a couple of week's before. We would have left Tuk in the _apartment for part-df the time while we ',wandered around Kitchener but we -had a sneaking suspicion that he'd figure he was permanently 'abandoned and howl and moan and bother everyone else in the building. That meant he logged a lot of driving as well as walking time and though he tried gamely, to keep up with us he looked a little greena round the gills, bored with it all and , dreaming of getting back to one of his hideouts in his own back yard. By Saturday night he was limping on a leg that we thought had healed before we left home and list less. We went home a little earlier on Sunday than we had originally planned, mostly because the dog was so unusually mopey, and miserable. It wasn't all catering to the dog though. We're not city people any more than he's a city dog and all. three of us were pretty glad to be able to sit outside on our own soil Sunday afternoon.- The wh ole experience gave us a good deal of sympathy for dogs who live in the city all the time. Arid maybe, by extension, for people who live -in 'the city all the time. City dogs, and maybe • city people, are pretty happy because they don't know what they're Brucefield personals Mr. and Mrs. Herb Stevens , Woodstock, spent- the weekend .' with Mr. , and Mrs. Jno.
