For 13 young hockey players,
Easter Saturday 1977, may be
remembered as one of the .most
exciting days of their lives for it
was this day that they were
proven to be the best PeeWee
team in their category in all of
'Ontario. To be on a, Provincial
Championship team is an
achievement few experience in a
lifetime, an honor In "'be
remembered for years to come.
-The route to the Championship
began on March 3, when the
Dublin team won the Western
Ontario title and advanced to the
0.M.H.A. quarter-final series. At
tha(point, there were seventeen
• teams from various parts of the
Province in the running for the
top award. The elimination
rounds reduced the number to the
two best, teams in the province for
the final series between Dublin
• and Flesherton.
Previous newspaper reports of
the games in this series are
indicative of the match-up. While
it may now ,.be said that Dublin
was never in 4, real trouble
throughout, the first two games
ended in overtime ties, and two,
others were won' by one goat-Tilt
credit goes to the Flesherton team
for a supreme effort over the five
game series.
Dublin's win on Saturday to
clinCh the title was no' giveaway
as both, teams (played, extremely,
well. Flesherton faced' elimination
and -Dublin could wrap up the
• series with a win. With , that
motivation, the tension and
_excitement increased from the
opening face-off.
The first, period ended ' in a
scoreless tie, despite several good
scoring opportunities at both
ends. In the second, Dublin went
ahead' on goals by Louis Looby
and Pat Melady, only to have
Flesherton come back to tie the
score by the :end of the period.
Early in the third, Flesherton got
the go-ahead goal and continued
in the lead until- the miway
iriark when. John. Hicknell scored
the equalizer. •
As the minutes
passed, another overtime game
seemed imminent,- or in fact, a
sixth game in Seaforth on Easter
- Sunday' was a possibility- But
'with two minutes and nine
seconds remaining, Louis Looby,
on a very clever play from' behind
the Flesherton net, moved out
. frontand tucked the Pnek'into the
empty corner. That goal -proved to
"Thethe Winner-as the boys hung on
to their 4-3 lead in the dying
seconds of the 'game.
•
The Dublin team was
undefeated in thirteen playoff .
games which is evidence enough
that they are ,true champions.
They trained as a team and they
played as a team, and each
member is to be congratulated for
his part in this total tears effort.
The• tremendonS fan support
which followed the team in the
;final ,.series was highly
commendable and helped to
inspire the team to its eventual
vic ory.
Brendan Lane, Captain,
accepted the 0.M.H.A. trophy on
behalf of the team at a centre-ice
thanks from the team.
