Seven Dwarfs' friend with a poisonous
apple
Action is more vivid in the story of the
three blind mice that chase the farmer's
wife and ultimately have their tails
chopped off with a butcher knife.
When the children grow beyond nursery
rhymes, they become fascinated with TV
cartoons, in which someone is always being
pushed off a cliff, rammed through a wall
or batted over the head.
Elmer Fudd hunts Bugs Bunny with a
vengeance, even though- the cool rabbit
outsma rts him every time. Chopper is
continually called upon to rescue his pal,
Tweety , from a conniving Puddy Cat.
Meanwhile. Wiley's only goal in life is to
stop the Road Runner dead in his tracks.
He drops boulders onto the road; he paints
tunnels on mountainsides; and he shoots
cannon balls. Each plan back-fires, and'
Wiley is the One that sees stars.
A little girl, that I know, doesn't like to
go to sleep, because she's afraid the cookie
monster will eat her up during the night.
The cookie monster is not a character in an
adult. TV shoiY; he -is-part of a highly-rated
children's -program.
If our desire to protect children from the
influence of violence is sincere, we should
consider all the sources.
Adults watch Starsky and Hutch, who
are out to get the bad guys. at 10, P.M.; at
noon,. children watch Wiley, who's out to
get the Road Runner. In the evening, we
concerned adults _wish_ the—youngsters
sweet dreams after telling them about a big
bad wolf or a wicked old witch.
No wonder kids have nightmares!

before seed can be distributed to
seed growers for eventual release
to farmers in these regions.

The public worries about the -TV
violence that children are expOsed to. As a
result, most ehatihels---featttre—ari early
evening "family time" with good, clean,
wholesome shows. Meanwhile the
toddlers, who are too young to understand
the television programs, are tucked into
bed and told little stories called nursery
rhymes.
For example, a big bad wolfe ,chases
three defenseless little pigs. He huffs, and
he puffs, and he. blows their houses down.
If not for their fast get-sways- and. a lot of
luck, the pigs would have become his
dinner. Our three heroes finally end their
dilemma with .a pot of boiling water.
Another mean old wolf almost fools Little
Red Riding Hood, who walks through the
woods to take a basket of goodies to her
grandmother. The wolf, disguised as the
grandmother, waits for her,
"Oh, Grandma, what big teeth you
have",, says Red innocently.
-"The better to eat you with, my dear,"
growls the wolf as springs from the bed.
If a passerby had not heard the little •
girl's screams, she would have suffered the
same fate that was intended for the three _

them in the forest to fend for themselves.

wicked witch catches them, and prepares
to eat them. Fortunately, they are too thin
to be eaten immediately, and before she
can fatten them up, they managed to
escape.

Throne Speech which incor-
porated a response to almost
every issue raised since the last
election by Opposition Parties,
and maintained that '-'with
dependable legislative co-opera-
tion" the, Government's program
can• be achieved by the end of the
present year.
Highlights of the Thron
Speech include the followin
Ontairo will — compleinnent
federal actions intended to create
employment, and develop a fiscal
policy to stimulate the economy
and expand the Province's work
force. Government funds will be
used to provide incentives to
create jobs for young people in
programs involving services to
senior citizens.
Rent controls, due to expire in
July, will be extended until the
end of next year. Working in close
co-operation with federal and
municipal governments, the
government apparently intends to
increase the amount of rental
housing for senior citizens and
families of low income. A series of
legislative measures are also
promised to improve and secure
the rights. of condominium
owners, both as purchasers, and
as residents.
The government plans to place
all new drivers on probation
probably fo'r two years, during
which time they would lose
driving • privileges if they
accumulated demerit `points for.
certain traffic offences.
More money is to be given to
school boards for • French
instruction in eleinent ary schools,
• • t.
and more resources are to be
made available to teach English
to children of recent immigrants
_and create a heritage language
program in schools te,,lt_elp, ethnic

their mother tongues and
cultures. _
An advisory committee on
small business is to, be formed,
making consulting help available
to small business through
universities and making lower
interest rates and larger loans
available through the Ontario
development Corporation.
A Commission of Inquiry is to
be created to examine
freedom-of-information laws 'to
ascertain where secrecy shoUld be
lifted on government' files and
where limits should• be placed on'
a Government's right to pry into
an individual's privacy and/ store

A Royal Commission is to be
appointed to probe the adminis-
tration of pension plans
-throughout Ontario to ensure
that contributOrs ••receive fair
benefits and' protection.
The Workmen's Compensation
Board is to be reviewed and
benefits adjusted for 'inftired—
workers to cover inflation.
Province-wide , single-trade
bargaining for .parts of the
construction industry would'
reduce contracts from about 200
to 20,
Some Government, operations
are to geHreloyated in the area'
east of Metro Toronto.
Greater efforts are to he made -
to reforest Crown land to create
jobs and improve the economy of
Northern•Ontario . An inventory
is to be conducted of abandoned
mines which could be a source of
water and air contamination. and
provincial funds are to he used
where necessary to clean up these
sources of pullinitin.
More money is to be allocated
for sewage yeatment works in
small communitijein eastern and
northern Ontario and create a
central monitoring unit for
research and control of dangerous
chemicals, such as mercury and
lead.
The Provincial Auditor is to be
given more staff to assist in the
annual review of government
spending, and proCedures arp to
be, , established to deal with
complaints against members of
police forces throughout the
province and to setup a code of
behaviour for police.
A province-wide physical
fitness program, using Wintario
money, is to be introduced. The
object is to promote various
community athletic programs,
partly with an eye to reducing
hospital costs.
All in all, the Throne Speech is
a very positive document. Our
main concern is for the welfare of
the people of Ontario, and if the
government's proposals are
feasible and financially practical
no-one will be, more pleased than
the Members of the Legfslature,
whatever Their m politital
affiliations. However, we shall be
very interested to hear the
specific details, _and no doubt
these will be made available to us
in the weeks ahead. ,
One-measure-announced-in-the
Throne Speech was the "effective
co-ordination" of 'provincial
services for children with special •
needs, and the formation of a
single, integrated organization in
the Ministry of Community and
Social Services. Liberal M.P.P.
Margaret Campbell has called for
"all embracing" - reform of
provincial legislation covering the
care of disturbed children,
because the present legislation
shares the responsibility between
the health ministry and the
ministry of community and social
services. Mrs. Campbell called a
press conference to present a
Liberal policy ' paper, several
months in preparation,c ailing for
services to be pulled together
under an umbrella division and
for .StandardS, licensing and
funding to be made uniform.
