SMYTHE'S SHOE STORE IVIITCHaL HER FIRST CHRISTMAS TREE — Who remembers the first Christmas tree they ever saw? Expositor reader Belle Campbell does. The year was perhaps " 1911 or 1912 when Nadine and Donald Currie of Rome , New York,came to spend Christmas with their Grandma Currie and uncles Archie and Hugh (shown below) on the Currie hoMegtead at Lot 7, Con. 11, Hibbert Township. Miss Campbell says the children brought the tree decorations with them from New York and their uncles cut the tree and put it up. it was the first decorated Christmas tree ever in the neighbourhood. Note the candles, the fragile glass ornaments and the plainly wrapped presents under the tree. The childrens' father, Dr. John M. Currie - took both photos. • SNOW DRIFTS 14 FEET HIGH — We've -complained about the quantity of snow that has fallen already this winter but who remembers 1946, wherEileen, left and Lorraine Smith posed in the 14 foot drifts that piled up near their house in McKillop? Their mother, Mrs. Gilbert Smith says the buyilding 42‘' the right in.the•photo is 14 feet hi gh and the banks just about reached it. In the other photo, Eileen, now Mrs. Gord Ross of'Exeter stands on a snowbank that's well over the trees. Mrs. Smith said there,wasn't even an attempt to plow the roads after a snowfall like that. one. Ringing out our warmest wishes for a Yuletide rich in goodwill and happiness. • - Our gratitude to v•!, ANOTHER SNOWY EASTER — After the stormy Easter two years ago which followed an unseasonably warm Christmas local-wisdom was that you didn't have to worry about travelling at Christmas anymore but the roads wer=e tricky at Easter time. It was the same in 1940 when this photo. was taken on Easter Sunday, March 24.
