HER FIRST CHRISTMAS TREE — Who remembers
the first Christmas tree they ever saw? Expositor
reader Belle Campbell does. The year was perhaps
" 1911 or 1912 when Nadine and Donald Currie of
Rome , New York, came to spend Christmas with
their Grandma Currie and uncles Archie and Hugh
(shown below) on the Currie hoMegtead at Lot 7,
Con. 11, Hibbert Township. Miss Campbell says the
children brought the tree decorations with them from
New York and their uncles cut the tree and put it up.
it was the first decorated Christmas tree ever in the
neighbourhood. Note the candles, the fragile glass
ornaments and the plainly wrapped presents under
the tree. The childrens' father, Dr. John M. Currie
- took both photos.

SNOW DRIFTS 14 FEET HIGH — We've
-complained about the quantity of snow that has
fallen already this winter but who remembers 1946,
wherEileen, left and Lorraine Smith posed in the 14
foot drifts that piled up near their house in
McKillop? Their mother, Mrs. Gilbert Smith says the
buyilding 42‘' the right in.the•photo is 14 feet hi gh
and the banks just about reached it. In the other
photo, Eileen, now Mrs. Gord Ross of'Exeter stands
on a snowbank that's well over the trees. Mrs. Smith
said there, wasn't even an attempt to plow the roads
after a snowfall like that. one.

ANOTHER SNOWY EASTER — After the stormy
Easter two years ago which followed an
unseasonably warm Christmas local-wisdom was that
you didn't have to worry about travelling at
Christmas anymore but the roads wer=e tricky at
Easter time. It was the same in 1940 when this photo.
was taken on Easter Sunday, March 24. It was taken
by reader Ben Hamilton, now of Whitby, outside his
home in Stratford and shows his nepheN Gerry
Power.
