Violence in hockeyy, at time*, Flyers
can be neatly compared to a ball
sickness, It will lie dormant for a
period of time and inst when you
think you've got it licked, it rea rs
its ugly head and bites your nose
off,
The I.H. L. had been cruising a
long nicely until last Sunday night
when suddenly a lot of players
began showing symtoms of the
plagu.
Hockey has, and always will be,
like football, a violent contact
sport.
The violence in hockey that -
everyone sems concerned about
these days is not the hitting but
the stick work.
All three genies featured chops
and slices that would make- a
lumberjack drool with envj, The
three contests combined had 87
minutes in penalties called. At
least 30' more minutes could have
been added on.
The big problem has en with
officials. Each team s plies 2
"refs" to officiate t games
Sunday _nights. All are
inexperienced.
The Flyer-Hayv1ff game got out
of hand early. Of the 87 minutes
in penalties called last Sunday, 40
were called in this game.
Blues 4 Kings 4
Murray Connelly, Brian Dale,
Lloyd Eisler and Sid Wocks all
scored to help the Kings gain the
tie with the Blues.
The slumping Blue Team got 2
goals from Clive Buist. Single
scores went to Jim McLeod and
Bill Price.
Flyers 3 Hawks 0
Ross Govier turned back 40
shots to gain a well deserved shut
out over the hapless hawks.
For the first time in six weeks
the Hawks put together a good
hockey game to completely
dominate the Flyers. Govier was
the difference.
Jim Watson scored twice with
Paul Hulley getting the 3rd Flyer
goal.
Stars 3 Wings 3
The high flying stars continued
to push toward the top of the
standings by gaining the tie with
the Red Team.
Dave Longstaff, Gary Finnigan
and John, Nash all scored for the
green team,
Kevin Bennett notched two
goals with Wayne Coombs adding
a•-single tall;ie for the Wings.
I,H.L. Notes: Jim Watson's two
goals Sunday pushed his career
total to 71,1.rje. is now fourth on
the all time list of goal scorers.
There has been a big problem
with the score sheets this season.
Numerous mix ups have occured
and have left the statistics less
than 100 per cent correct.
Because of the blunders a lot of it
has been guess work. Hopefully
the problem will be corrected
before it becomes a total disaster.
