There is more time lost from
work by Canadians suffering from
lung diseases and other
respiratory disorders than any
other major group of diseases,
says Dr. Earl Hefshfield, Medical,
Director of the Canadian
Tuberculosis and Respiratory
Disease Associations
The prevention and control of
lung diseases is the aim of the
Huron-Perth I ung Association,
the provincial (local) affiliate of
the Canadian Tuberculosis and
Respiratory Disease Association.
In addition to high respiratory
disease mortality figures, there is
the added problem that lung
diseases generally take a Fong
time to develop, produce
increasing disability and result in
chronic illness, time lost from
work, high medical costs and
heavy economic losses to the
Canadian economy. • ..
More than' 18 thousand
Canadians (18,132) died of
respiratory diseases in 1974, an
increase of more ,,,. than five
hundred over the—Previous year.
Emphysema and bronchitis,
the fastest growing diseases in
Canada claimed 2,750 lives in
1974.
The respiratory disease
morbidity rate tells an even more
revealing story. In 19-3 (the latest
year, for which figures are
avail' le), more than 350
thous' d (358,192) cases
involving respiratory disease
treated fn Canadian hospitals for
a total of more than 3,600,000
patient days (3,649,544). Patients
with bronchitis and emphysema
totalled 50,007 cases in Canadian
