What What are you going to do with
that old barn? Should you
remodel it fora new purpose? Or
should you leave it as is and use it
as a utility building? I know these
questions are never easy to
answer and they vary with each
individual farm.
However, there is a technique•
that can be helpful in evaluating
old buildings whereby you can
estimate and compare the costs
involved in remodeling and
renovating with that of building a
new structure.
The first step is to consider the
building's basic componenti —
the roof, walls, floor, foundation
and frame. You maY,As9 want to
add *sixth item environmental
control components such as.•
insulation, interior surface and
ventilation. These are n of usually
in the old buildings.
The hat steekto establish the
nurn-&i• of years of Tali; left in the
old building, If the old building is
a two-storey ' . barn being
remodeled for hog finishing, it
should have a useful life of about
12 years.
Now you are ready to detail the
costs. First, consider the parts of
the building that must be
renovated, then list the parts that
must be completely replaced or
that require special maintenance
during their new use.
Next, estimate the material
that will be required for the roof,
walls, flocor and foundation — and
in estimating don't forget the
time and material required to get
the building ready for
remodeling, For instance, when
you're ready to re-roof a building,
you may find rotten sheathing
and in removing that you may
also find a rafter or two that may
have to be replaced. I think we all
realize that estimating labor for
remodeling is at best a guess, and
in some cases it may not come
close to the actual cost, abut I
, believe a real guessing effort is
better than no guesUat all. •
Since the foundation is one of
the most important parts of any
building you should figure how
much time it will take to put a
foundation under a building with
the building in the way. Then you
should compare this to the time to
build the foundation for a new
building. The following table has
been developed as a guide with
an old two-storey barn in mind as
the existing structure.

2:1 or 2.5:1
1:1 or 1.25:1

2: 1(Com-
plete renewal)
In reality it will take
approximately 1 1/2 to 2 times the
labor for each of the components
considered for remodeling as for
the same components in a new
structure. From this you can
determine the wisdom of, your
more space with a Well-cleSigqc

"Daddy has so much work to do,

moment, then asked seriously,
"Well, why don't they just put
him in a slower group?"

People, people everywhere . . .
and minds occupied with Christ-
mas shopping won't be watching
traffic. There are lots of things for
drivers to look' out for — jay-
walkers, people who cross at the
right spots but get squeezed out of
the walkway, shoppers with vision
obscured by packages, icy roads
making walking slow and hazard-
ous. So cut your speed and give
out with the Christmas courtesy.
Don't forget, you're a pedestrian
shopper sometimes yourself!

There's no easy way out if you're caught.
Shoplifters don't get sympathy from anyone
anymore. Stores will prosecute to the hilt.
Judges don't hesitate to impose the maximum
penalty. And society backs them up. Because
the consumer foots the bill for the annual
billion dollar loss in ripped-off merchandise.
If you think shoplifting is a joke . . better
think again. You could find yourself' laughing
alone . . . all the way to the jail!
