REVIEW REVIEVV'.REVIEW, R • IEW REVIE\V REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW For the last few weeks, I've been working off and on in the cafeteria during my lunch period. At the end, 'I stand in the doorway and gaze out over the sea of garbage left by the students. It WS not a pleasant sight. I'm appalled at the fact that people who are old enough to attend a secondary school, are not old enough to keep it clean. Instead, they leave their lunch bags, french fry trays, candy • wrappers and pop bottles in trash heaps all over the tables. This year, the cafeteria was taken over by the student's council. They are doing an excellent job as I ha'.ve said before. But. it seems that the students themselves have turned from humans to pigs! Every month, a different house is in charge of cafeteria clean-up. So far, as I have seen, clean-up, which is a massive job, has been done by the cooking staff and the janitors. There should not be any mess to clean up whatsoever. If it is too much trouble for a student to carry his or-her lunch bag to the' garbage pails; if it is too much of a bother to put coke bottles in their provided cases, then it should be too much of a job for the student's council to'operate the cafeteria, and they should shut it down until the students learn enough to pick up after, " themselves. If each. cleaned up his own mess, there would-be no problem. Most people are just too damn lazy and apathetic. Se, I say, close the cafeteria until the lesson is learned! If the pigs don't like it .... let 'em eat at home!! Dal earson s (By Carol Racho) This year SDHS has cheer- leaders to cheer her teams onto victory, After ' a year of no cheerleading, nine girls have gotten together on. their own and organized cheers for inter-school events. It was •a close and exciting game. They were behind with Exeter having a ten point lead. But they made a great comeback and won with a score of 48-39 for the Seaforth Senior girls. This is their sixth consecutive win. Keep up the good work! The Junior girls did not fair as 'Well as the seniors. They lost against the Exeter Junior girls. With a little encouragement from (By Kathy Caldwell) Do you know what the price was for a lock of Louis Riel's hair at the time of his execution? What was the half time score of the '76 Super Bowl game,, These are examples of the questions faced at every game played by SDHS's Reach for the Top" team. When I interviewed team member Don Melady I discovered that every year a team comprising four students possessing a superior knowledge on many • subjects is assembled. They then proceed to attempt to match their skills against the very best from other schools in the Southwestern Ontario region. This year the team consists of the grade thirteen students: Don Melady, Dave Smith, Pat Rose and Jo Ann Primeau. Though the entire team, is equally knowledg- able on all topics, Don said that he tends to study up on art, music and French before a game while, on the distaff side, Pat concen- trates on math and' science. • The questions deal with every subject from sports to popular, music, foreign languages and contemporary life. And yes, the competition and the questions definitely are challenging. As to last year's score, Don said "We ,won one and lost one. We were beaten by Orangeville - • who were only put out by the Canadian champions." This year the team seems to be well on their way in their attempt to improve over last year's score. /They have played their first game against Arthur and won with an Senior girls win, juniors lose TRUCKS -'74 Ford Louisville, 750, 5 speed, 2 speed axel, 18' van or cabin chassis. The team's coach is 'SDHS history teacher Mr. Moore who provides the team with much appreciated encouragement. There are three levels of competition starting with the regionals, which end in March, then the provincials, which end in May and, for a grand finale, the Canadian Championships which are held in Calgary during July. As far as' Don was concerned, there were no problems connected with the games except that it "maybe emphasizes speed too much." Don's personal opinion of Reach for the Top?" "We're only in it for fun. . .to leatn a lot about things one is not exposed to generally...and to get . to know other kids. I really like "Reach for the Top. I wish I could participate again.',' The team's next game will be televised sometime in January (we'll let you know of the exact date in a later issue). So, in January, tune into Channel 8 at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon and match your wits against the challengers as we watch SDHS win their way to the Canadian Championships in yet •another exciting round of "Reach for the Top." (Incidentally, according to team member Dave Smith, the going price of Louis Riel's _hair was $800.) the students and through practice, the junior girls may come-`up with a win ,for 'SDHS. This week the junior and senior girls will be playing against Stratford Central. These games should prove interesting as well as challenging for both teams. PICK YOUR OWN Brussels Sprouts 30° per lb.
