orient members
gather with mascot
the French troops, France capi-
tulated. . The regiment was
ordered to retreat back to the pdrt
of Brest and to destroy all
vehicles and heavy equipment,
sadly the Indian Chief was buried
and all the equipment destroyed,
the reason for this order was that
there were not endugh ships toe
carry the troops and their equip-•
ment back to England.
Word reached Canada, that the
regiment had lost its mascot, a
wood carver was commissioned to
carve an Indian Chief, this new
mascot was shipped over to the
regiment and travelled with it' for
the next five and, a half years.
Today it stands proudly in the
armories at Belleville, Ontario.
Every year on Thanksgiving,
members of the Hastings and
Prince Edward Regiment gather
for their reunion and, renew old
friendships while the''old Indian
Chief looks proudly on.' for, he
indeed is a very' real part of the
regiment-.

County Libectry over b 00f
(By John D. Baker,
Publicity Chairman,
Branch 156
Almost thirty-seven years ago.
three young recruits stole out of
their barracks and climbed to the
top of an old canning factory.
The year was. 1539, the date
was Dec. 16, the canning factory
had been converted into a
barracks to house the newly
formed regiment, the armories
were not large enought to
accommodate a regiment at full
strength.
Once the young soldiers had
reached the top of the old
building, they groped their way
towards the statue of an Indian
Chief, armed with various tools
they proceeded to unfasten the
statue from its moorings, this
done, they lowered it to the
ground by means of a rope.
The next morning at reveillle
an Indian Chief stood in front of
the sergeant's mess with"SpJar in
hand,' as if on guard, from that
moment the regiment adopted the
Chief as a mascot.
That day, Dec. 17, 1939 the
regiment left for overseas taking
with them the new member.
"Little Chief" the eight foot
bronze statue boarded the troop
train at Picton, Ontario and
travelled to Halifax where it was
put aboard the S.S. Ormande and
lashed to the bow, there it stayed
until the waves started to break
over the bow during an Atlantic
storm, it was then removed to
dryer 'quarters.
On June 13, 1940, the regiment
sailed for France, their job was to
reinforce the defense of Paris,
however before joining up with
Tft Horan County Library
system will be QM 40dget by the
end of this year to the tune of
$15,000 to $20,000.
According to Librarian Bill
Partridge part of 'the over
expenditure is due to a deficit
carry over from 1975 of $8,800.
An increase in costs for books, of
between eight and 10 per cent,
was citied as another contributing
factor.
Mr. Partridge also explained
that during the past year the
library has seen a considerable
increase in book circulation over
previous years. Circulation in
1975 (for the January to August
period) was computed at 226,000
books. For the same period this
year the figure is 235,992.
County wide the Library
Service operates 28 library outlets
with a staff of 35 to "40, many of
those employees being part time.
The total budget for 1976 was .set
at $301,250.
Of that total budget, $70,000
had been set aside for the actual
purchase of books and for
processing those books. In 1975
$81,226 went towards books and
processing, $61,340 in 1974 and
$53,988 in 1973: The total budget
in 1973 was only $183,518.
The increase in book circulation
over the past year, Mr. Partridge
explained, has been steady each
month, and most noticeable in the
-,missarammommv:

Brucefield Church
town end village branches.
B les this year are ) iist costing
more, he explained, and the book
budget was reduced from last
year's $84;000 to rQ,000.
A special emphasis on the
purchase of on-fiction as
opposed to fiction was undertaken
this year and this may, in the long
run, effect a reduction in future
costs. Non fiction books, Mr.
Partridge explains, are , not read
out as fast as fiction and remain

When the County Library
Board meets on November 3 the
question of the budget deficit will
be considered. Mr. Partridge
noted that the library staff had
not been increased in some time
and that the work load was on a
steady upswing. "There is no
doubt we will n eed additional
staff as well," he said, "but that
is a question the Library Board
will have to consider."
