Pioneers of Brumfield were
mostly Scotch tip.scent,hath High-
land and Howland, a tgyir,English
and '100.
The nearest. church for these
people, to- attend was at Egmond-
ville under the leadership of Rev.
Win.' Ozalham, There were so
many • "Gaelic speaking people
whose dearest wish was to have a
minister' ...who 'could speak both
English and Gaelic but such a
man was hard to find.
Neil Ross, who lived north of
the village, on the Jack Hender-
son farm, on a business trip to
London, heard of a young Scotch
man preaching at Lobo, went out
to hear him and was greatly
impressed by his `sermon.
Mr. Ross, the minister, was
going to Kincardine and rode as
far as Brucefield with Ross and
the outcome was Mr. Ross was
called to Brucefield where he
labored for 35 years.
At his death, he was buried in
the old cemetery„An the Tucker-
smith side 'of the. London Road,
He was known aS the Man With
the Boot. This congregation was
organized about 1875 ' and,
according to records, became a
part of the Presbyterian Church of
Canada in 1876.
The first church was on the
property where the old Andrew
Scott, house stands. The Manse
was south on the London Rd.
between Boyces and Allans.
This property remained with
the Free Kirk members.
So the Presbyterians entered
the Union without minister,
church or manse. The church was
built and dedicated in 1876 and
the manse,in 1877.
Having neither minister or
session, Rev: Mr. McCuag,. John
McCash, Varna and Mr. • Mathe-
son of Clinton formed the first
session. The first church roll
contained 74 names, 5 being
added later that winter. Rev. T.G.
ThamOsau was the. first rqident
minister, „ Robt, 1410.§.1?-9r9P8•

HOW ,MANY ITEMS DO YOU RECOGNIZE? — There were few
items which a community required that could_ be readily
obtained in a general store of seventy-five years ago. Scott's Store at
Brucefield was no exception as the large stock available in the store
indicates. The exterior of the store is shown in the lower picture. For
many years the brick store --- the second to be occupied by the
Scotts — stood on the north-east corner of the intersection of the
London and Mill Roads.
