Emily insisted that, although
she still was a dog, she just had to
tell her dad something. "Dogs
. can't talk", he said again.
But: eventually a compromise
-was reached. Eirdly took a break
from being a dog and talked to
her dad as a four year old girl
again. But oh yes, she
immediately went back to being a
dog.
When her parents went out for
the evening, we had Emily :the
dog little girl) to look after. We
got her to sit up at the dinner
table and eat stew with us.
But Emily, the little girl,
doesn't really like stew so she
decided to become a dog again
and sit under the table with Tuk.
She didn't want any dog food but
we gradually hit on a simple way
to give Emily some dinner.

But it wasn't until we'd been
there for a while that I really
understood how fast and to what
extent Emily picks things up.
You see, our dog Tuk, who's
two years old and at times likes to
think he's a person, came with us
to Thunder Bay. He and Emily
were great playmates.
I'm not sure whether Emily's
decision to ,become a dog had to
do with admiration for Tuk or with
the fact that Tuk got a' lot of
attention from us and from her
parents.
But once her decision was
made, ' Emily was down on all
fours, following the dog around
the house. She barked like the
dog, , yawned like _the dog and

After the furnace, the water heater is the biggest user of energy in your
home. Waste hot water, and you're wating valuable energy.
That's a good reason for getting full value from
every way you can. By fixing leaky faucets.
By insulating long runs of hot water pipe,
By waiting until you have a full load before you
switch on the clothes or dishwasher. By using
cold or cool water when it will do, the job.
By taking shorter showers or shallower baths.
By making sure that all the hot water that -

up to y6u to use hot water
wisely. Don't waste a drop.

"I turned around and there

Emily's desire to he a dog

later when Andy Went out to get
gas. She wanted to go with him
but she didn't want 'to wear her
shoes and coat because "dogs
don't wear shoes."
-Inescapable logic but we finally
brought her around by pointing
out that 'she had neither a warm
fur coat or tough leathery paws
like a dog. . .yet.
Emily's dog-ness wore off
during a discussion about ice
cream cones and when she came
home from her drive she was
happy to sit on my knee and listen
to a story that would be more
popular with little girls than 'with
dogs.
But when she went to bed she
still wanted Tuk to sleep in her
room.. .and probably would have
slept on the floor with him if that
would have kept him there. Again
a compromise was reached and
the dog slept; for awhile anyway,
in the half outside her room.

Emily wasn't too keen about
being a dog the next morning.
But while we were getting ready
to leave she said she'd be glact to
come back to Seaforth with us and
with Tuk.
She had to agree with her
Mother, though, that she
probably wouldn't really enjoy
being tied up with Tub in the
backyard all day while we went to
work.
It's great to be a dog, I think
Emily decided, but selectively,
not all the time.
