It was a walkathon with a
different twist on Saturday when
Winthrop and community people
raised money for the local ball
park... one of the participants was
a steam engine.
The engine, owned by Martin
Murray and Glen McNichol,
drove the whole walkathon route,
from Winthrop to two and a half
miles north -of Walton and back
again. Mr. McNichol walked
behind the machine, as did Be
Little' and Bruno Braeker, who
served as engineer and fireman,
respectively. •
The old steam machine gave a
big boost to the walkathon
proceeds when Mr. Murray, Mr.
McNichol and Glen Beuerman got
$300 in pledges for Carrying Joyce
McClure, Dianne Alexander and
Joyce Braeker the rast mile on the
steam engine.
Total pledges for the walkaton
aren't in yet but organizers-
expect that more than$1400 was
raised. 54 people registered for.
the walk Saturday morning. The
youngest walkers to, complete the
course were Dan. Beuerman, 3,
Wayne Regele, 5, and Ronny
Pryce.
Walkers were served free hot
dogs, hamburgers and pop when
they arrived back at the Winthrop
park.
