On the toad heading east into
Brodhagen there is a signl Perth

apply to all of Perth County, but
the people of Brodhagen and

it, they should just attend one of
the many commenity activities at
Brodhagen such as the pork hocks
and sauerkraut suppeein the fall
or the annual chicken barbecue in
the summer. This reporter
attended• their chicken barbecue
recently to fake a few pictures and
have a good meal. But before he
could leave several local people
insisted he take over the job of
official chicken tester, sampling
every rack of chicken just to make
sure it was done. If that isn't
friendliness, then there isn't such
a thing.
Both the pork hocks and
sauerkraut supper and the
chicken barbecue are sponsored
by the Brodhagen Chamber of
Commerce, a peculiar institution
for a rural area. The Chamber

told the Expositor' how the
, Chamber of Commerce sot
started in 1957, In that. year the
young married group from-. St.
Peter's Lutheran Church
travelled to the Mitchell Lions
Park to hold their picnic and
games.
"While Ford DickiSon and I
were holding the string at the
finishing line of a race, he asked
me why we couldn't have
something like this in Brodhagen,
so when we got back one person
told another, until we called a
meeting."
The meeting was held April 29,
1957 in the basement of St.
Peter's Lutheran Church with the
manager of the Stratford C. of C.
invited to explain just what
services a Chamber could offer to
the community.. Those present
must have been convinced by
what was said as they elected an
executive with Russell Sholdice as
president, Ford Dickison, 2nd
vice-president, Wilf Ahrens,
secretary and J. F. Prueter as
treasurer.
In slightly over a year after that
meeting the Chamber started
construction of a community hall.
But to finance the hail,' the
Chamber needed a bank loan and
they had no collateral. As a resolt
each member signed a $250 bank
note to secure the loan.

the name suggests, the late Mr.

industry which first started in the
late 1940's with the manufacture
of exhaust fans for chicken barns.
Mervin Leonhardt, who owns a
plumbing and heating shop in
Brodhagen which employs five
men, worked with Ford Dickison
when he first started. Mr.
Leonhardt particularly
remembers with fondness 'a

developed and sold right across
the country. The kit, which was
the first of , its type, consisted of
bits and pieces of metal for
blocking up holes in a baler so
that the baler could be used for
baling grain. The baled grain
would then be fed into the
