awctust and glue do fill jobs. key to painting Preparation "work Whether it's a defect in the wood yotere using or a defect in your own workmanship, there's a filler available that • will hide the holes and cracks in your home carpentry. There's a wide assortment of Commercial fillers ayailable. There's alsoone homemade filler that will handle most problems. A mixture of sawdust and glue is cheap, readily available and will take stain or paint.Use such a mixture to fill- nail and screw --holes,small cracks and to rebuild broken edges. Putty — Ordinary linseed oil putty that's used around windows — will do in these same situations provided the surface 'is to be painted rather than stained. Putty has little strength, so don't use
where there will be stress.
Either dry or oil colors can be
used to color it in advance. If you
intend to paint, shellac first.
Putty is thoroughly dry in about
two days., Smooth off while still
soft, or sand when dry.
Wood putty is a putty you mix
yourself. It's in powder form and
.s mixed with water. Dries in
about two hours. It dries white so
if a color is desired tint with
water-soluble powder colors first.
When the filler is dry it can be
sanded smooth.
Plastic wood is the best known
-14 of the commercial, ready-to:use
fillers. It's avilable in tubes or'
cans,, can be applied with a putty
knife. Plastic wood is pliable,
dries to a wood-like substance
overnight. Can be sanded, sawed
and painted. Although waiting overnight is advised before finishing, don't wait too long to clean off tools and finger since it dries quickly. Since it will not take stain evenly, buy a color that's- close to the color of the wood. (It's available in clear or popular wood colors.), If a large hole is being filled or the surface is being built-up to any extent, apply plastic *ood in layers. Allow each layer la dry before applying the next. White lead is one of the older products used in place of linseed oil putty on large areas.Because white lead is \ poisonous, Use calking compound as a substitute. Calking is excellent for cracks in siding, exterior joints. Although it remains pliable underneath, the
top hardens and can be painted.
Plain glue, particularly the
touch urea resin glues, can be
used if necessary as filler. glue is
goodlor filling and grains. It will •
n ot take stain, and can be painted
only if rough sanded first.
If a dent or stain shows up in a
finished surface a shellac stick in
a matching color is your best bet.
Soften the stick by warming it and
then rub over the dent. The
refinished spot willtake shellac or
varnish.
When storing ready-mixed
fillers, make certain
that containers are tightly capped,
to prevent drying out. Fillers in a
powder state, such as wood putty,
should be kept in a dry place. Old
linseed oil putty can be softened
by working in a little fresh linseed
oil.

Summertime allows the homeownet to tackle home improvements that could not be done 'in any other season. With vacation, pleasant weather and the right approach, these jobs can be a pleasure. One of the roost obvious chores for the summer improvement list is exterior - decoration. Fot those who enjoy working around home, putting a protective and decorative cover on the house can be rewarding and relaxing. There is a 14 step-by-step procedure thin shopld be followed when painting a house, regardlesS of the 'mind of surface your home :has wood. siding, stucco, brick, concrete or cement block — that can help it look years younger. _

Of major concern are: Areas'
which have become chalky. Chalk
must be removed so new paint
can bond to the old finish. Glossy
areas such as upper frames and
soffits, are protected and usually
have a calcium-like build-up that
may not be visible. On a humid
day, moistt,ce will activate this
build-up and cause the new finish
to blister.
Where needed, recaulk joints

window frames. Re sure to get the
caulking compound into cracks
and not only on the surface.
Scrape away the old cracked
putty around window frames.
Clean the window -sash surfaces
thoroughly then r eputty the frames carefully. Prime bare spots. There are two primers - for the home, galvanized primer and exterior oil primer. Galvanized primer is to be applied to eavestrough, downspout s, louvered vents, wherever paint has peeled back to expose galvanized metal. These bare spots should first be washed with vinegar to cut the flux coating, then primed. Exterior oil primer is to be applied to all bare wood, new of otherwise, For a smooth finish, sand the primer after it dries. All that remains now is application of the top coat, unless specified, as thinning breaks down paint. Choose a high quality top coat for a lasting finish.
There are two types of top coat;

The problem then becomes one of wait-ing until the rain stops, since you can't get the roof fixed while it's rain-ing. On the other hand, when the weather is nice and -the roof isn't leaking many, people have a tendency to ignore the problem. Actually, it isn't wise to wait until the roof leaks before doing something about it. It's better and often less costly to give the roof a "going over" every now and then.
