OLD TCRT.t u NT EXAMPLES.--
Solonlon seems to refer to the boil-
ing -like movement. of grape -juice by
fermentation, during which the wine
gets colored from the skins, and the
poisonous alcoho] is produced, for this
wise king says: "Look not'upon the
.,
wine when it is red; when it givetlr
his color in the cup ; when It lnoveth
itself aright. At • tris last it bitetlr
like a serpent and stingetll like an
adder.” The 'nether of Lemuel says;
`'It is not for kings to drink wine,
nor for princes strong• drink, lest
they drink and forget the law, and
pervert the judgment of any of the
aflieted.—(Proverbs xxxi., 4.)
The king; Pharaoh, who honored
' Joseph, seems to have only drank
wine freshly squeezed out of' the
grapes, aud, therefore, ,unfermented
and unintoxicating ; for the' king's
butler, in describing his duties,
which he had dreamed he was again
performing, said : "I pressed the
grapes into Pharaoh's sup, and gave
the cup into Pharaoh's hand." This
-was about 1,700 years before 'the
birth of Christ.
The priests and Nazar•ites were re-
quired to abstain. Daring the exodus
(about 1,500 years -before Christ),
God commanded the priests, on pain
of death, to abstain from strong
dring during their ministrations.
During the exodus, too, God ordained
theformation of lin Order of N'azarites
to "separate themselves unto the
Lord," by a vow to abstain fronsi
wine and even from the products of'i
the vine. When the angel tolls
lanoah's wife that she should have a'
son, he also told her that the Lord
required her to abstain from wine,
and to bring up her son as a strict
Nazarite from birth; and aceording-
ly'Samson, the strongest man that
ever lived, was born and reared as
n abstainer. Daniel, too, was ad -

abstinence. •
The abstinence was
ivuntrastcd by command of .the Lord

people of Sudab, and while- God

fathers' precepts, -and siiicl they

NEW TLST.t 1MNT EXAMPLEs.—
John the Baptist, the forerunner of
Christ, was a, Nazarene ,from his
birth by angelic command. It is
highly probable that the Essenes,
who were numerous at this time, and
led a very pure and devout life, were
also abstainers, Christ was not a
Nazarite, but there is no evidence
that he made, or used, intoxicating
*ravine; and in the Lord's Supper he
blessed '"`the fruit of the vine ".—
which alcohol is not. Tradition
speaks of St. Peter, St. Matthew and
St. James, the Lord'sd+brother, as ab-
stainers. Timothy, we know, was
