It seemed that the green sweaters held a certain majic and the Stars were among the most feared of LILL. Clubs of the past, This season's version of the green machine shattered the fine tradition of ,Stars teams of the past. This years club was, perhaps, the all time worst I.H.L. team to play in the ten year old league. • Their season was marked with internal dissention„ on ice frustrations and a number of sudden drastic player changes. It all began with the initial draft of players at the start of the season. The club was ' put together poorly and all the members of the team , knew. it. • They lost their firit game of the season 9 - 0 'to the Wings and tot from that point on it was an up-hill battle just to ice a team. The Stars went through nine player changes.. They ha either lost or gained a new_face each week and the togetherness needed on the ice was never evident. Don Papple took over the coaching duties (captain) and tried to implant a "sense. of spirit. It worked to some degree and it was generally felt that the green •td'arn was the most spirited of all the teams I.H.L. clubs. They worked their kutts off in all, the games they' played but.an obVious lack of talent prevented the team from accomplishing the feats that their predecessors had done in seasons past. Jim McLeod and Paul McKellar I' combined to score half the Stars goals. Both players were among the most consistent in the leagu%, and they both_finished among the top twenty scorers. that was quite a feat in itself because the team scored only 42 goals. , Dave Broome and Brian Leonhardt of the Wings combined • for 43 goals - more than the whole Stars team. It simply shows that both McKellar and McLeod kept the Stars from being completely humiliated each game out. It must be noted that McKellar was a late-corner to the Stars. If the team had kept some players they could have been much better. The te'am saw a bright light at the end of tunnel on the night of Jan. 4 however. That night the green team upset the first place Wings 6 - 4 and any lack of confidence they had experienced suddenly and dramatically disappeared. For what should have been a turning point in their season turned out to he the final death knell. The next week they were hammered 10 - 3 by the Kings in what had to be the biggest let down of any one team this season. The climax had been building up and it suddenly passed. For the Stars the season was over that night. The Hawks This team, without a doubt: had to be the most 'easy going" member team club in the league • 'this season. Gary Nicholson pieke,c1-- this team at the draft last 'fall. 1-16 must have known what he was doing because the Hawks came within a shade of upsetting the Blues in the 0.11.L. playoffs. Made up of a number , of generally quiet fellows the team struggled most of the season just to stay ahead of the Stars. Losing 'came as naturally as walking to-them-and-they never • seemed to complai*. I'm: sure they felt fruStrated many times but it just never showed.. Their pacifist aftitude probably accounted for the mediocre season but the team .did have ,talent to surprise a few people. The biggest, problem with the Hawks was organization. Many nights this past season' they had fought hard enough to stay close .for a good part of manytarrieS• but seemed to fall apart in the late stages of most' contests. By Dave Broome). A couple of , weeks ago • the Kings pulled off the upset of the season by dumping, the Wings 3 - 1 'and,4a.king ' the I.H.L: mini series two games to one. " • The team had fanciful visions of. •-'a berth in the finals against the Blues. With only the Flyers.remaining as the lone obstacle in the path to glory, the Kings looked like sure bets to be the club that would face the powerful Blue team • in the final.„„ ',What should have been an injection of adrenalin, in the form of the Wing win, turned out to be a severe case of the "letdown Blues-. The Flyers whipped the Kings 6 - 2 last Sunday night to add another chapter„ to the most bizarre season on record. It has been virtually impossible to make accurate predictions on games this season because the "almost impossible" has happened so often. The King team of last week resembled the club that defeated the • Wings by colour of sweater A scrambly team, with no defined system could best describe the Hawks. Loaded defensively with Ray Devereaux, John Watt, Gary Nicholson and Kevin Henderson all the Hawks lacked was a steady offence. The team scored a meagre total of-4.8:goals. Only the Stars connected for fewer tallies during the season. Terry Stevenson was a pleasant surprise for the team finishing with a total of 17 points - highest on the team. Ray Hutchinson was the Hawk's net minder. At times he was unbeatable but anyone can fail when one has to face between 40 and 50 shots on a, night. Actually the team finished well this season. They 'had good potential but lacked overall balance. Injuries and illness hurt their chances but the Hawks, one of the new teams this ,season, finished in fine fashion against the powerful Blues. They lost the final gime of the playoff series by a I - 0 score. Despite losing the series 2 - 1 they 'showed everyone they had something that we did not see all • season long. Dave' Longstaff, John Nash, Joe MacLean, Jim Watson, Perry Broome and Bob Watson all combined .• for the Flyers goals while Jerry Feeny and Jack Baker replied for the Kings. • The Kings will need a supreme effort next Sunday in order to even the series. they can put together an effort similar to a couple of weeks ago the King team can win the series. The Flyers are in the drivers seats right now and are. the hotte st team in the league. Despite the loss of Glen Nicholson, the team pulled What had to be a big surprise last week. This, of course, ' is based on past performances. • The Blues have never won a title while King teams have won twice in three seasons.
