There's a lesson in their story for all of us, 11 men started McKillbp Mutual in 1876. They hadto, in order to protect their farms and homes that they had carved out of the wilderness around Seaforth. They didn't ask the government to protect . them. They didn't pay bonuses or give tax concessions to a big insurance company( to 'come in here and insure .them. They did it ,thernSelves. A few farmers persuaded other farmers that the insurance company would be of mutual benefit to them all. After•they worked hard on their farrns, they worked hard on Mokilldp Mutual's rlora' MacDonald's Campaign for the federal Tory leadership shows that there is still room for the average perSon in this country's 'politics. Flora has taken her campaign tp the people in rented cars and economy plane trips. She hasn't chartered any jets or had crowds of aides to drive her around. The best thing about Flora's campaign is that she has been -financed almost totally by donations of under $100. She's had thousands of donations of $1 or $2 pour into her Ottawa office from all over the country. People press .a dollar into her hands at meetings. Why? Because she's asked for their help. Flora gave an accounting the other day of where every cent contributed to her leadership campaign had coma. from, and there were almost no big corporate or individual donors. To the editor To• the editor: At this point . 7'•1 weeks since the announced closure of Goderich Nychiatk• Hospital. this committee is not aware of any written response to any of the. --InWvening groups who have spoken out on, this issue, from either the Premier or Hon. Frank • Miller, A number of vague announcements yhave been made in response to media questions and tither en'quiries. The only information' that we do Dear Editor: Have , you not gone to do your washing at the local laundromat? If you haven't I'd adivse You :to do so, but don't he shocked at what you find. I did ?nine this past weekend and the following things need to be looked after! • I. There is no hot water. There hasn't been for the past two weeks. 2. The change machine takes your quarter and keeps it. 3..The machine for getting extra soa p, bleach, fabric softner and garbage bags also takes your money with nothing in return, 4. The pop machine also works beautifully. Put yourmoney in and bingo, no pop, press coin release ha! hal no Motrey back. 5. The Big-Boy washer doesn't work too well either. It doesn't seem to hold water. but it also will take your money. behalf, as, ' directors, 'agents, treasurers or managers. Most of the early McKillop Mutual men have descendants who are still involved with the company, as official or shareholders. And while, the original Jew would be shocked to see that both the company's present secretary-. treasurer and, the mayor of their home' town are women,,A.they'd probably stroke their beards and recover quite well. After all, they were the progressive far seeing people 100 years ago. McKillop Mutual has grown. It has 1500 policies in force now and more than $50 million in insurance at risk. But it's still right here in Seaforth and it's still people working together for the good of all. . . • Happy Birthday' McKillop. She's straight forward and she has common sense. She's involved ordinary Canadians in the PC race to the extent that they are giving ° her money to help make her run. We need more of this kind of democracy. Flora may not win the PC leadership this weekend. We'd like to see her do it. A contest between down to earth, grass' roots Fl6ra and Prime Minister Trudeau would make a most exciting race. But she's a Woman and the Tories are the Tories and one has to be realistic. Even if Flora doesn't win, she's given Canada something 'of value. ,Shel,s taken campaign financing away from the fat cats and people looking for favours and proven that ordinary, average Canadians are interested .anough in politics to help pay the shot. know to-be correct is that this issue and the question 'of general hospital closings iS bein„g rev iewed, 'the Minister has said that he is gii ing thought„ to „a number 'of alterneris es. - In the , absence in!,„ any .definitive statement.' the whole sittlation .:becomes' more se..riou\by creating apprehenSion and unrest.
