Newly elected Ontario Liberal
leader Stuart Smith • says, he'
doesn't think the province intends
to do anything for the mentally
.....igtarded at. all, .even though
health minister Frank Miller has
said that the Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital will be used, as a
resource centre for the retarded
after it is closed.
Dr, Smith spent a half hour in
Seaforth Friday afternoon, on his
way back to Hamilton from a
tour and a meeting with the staff
of Goderich Psychiatric.
The Hamilton psychiatrist says
'the federal government gave the
province '.about $14 million in
specialeiinds to, be spent for the
'retarded last -year. 'He says he
thinks the province has spent thi•s-
money on other things.
If the Ministry of Health ean
sell GPH on paper to the Ministry
of Social and Community Services
who run things for thementally
retarded, the province can claim
they spent $4 or 55 million, of this
federal money. for the building.
That way, although no money
changes hands, the province will ,
be able to account' for sonic of the
federal funds for the retarded.
GPH is uric of the most
progressive small hospitals in. the
• country, Dr. Sinith says. "It's a
model facility for a rural area."
• The' province picked the small-
est psychiatric hospitals, Tim-
' mins and Goderich to elbse. Dr,
'Smith says, because they figured
that their° patients could easily be
transferred to nearby hospitals.
"In the case of Timmins. the
nearest, in North Bay, is • 270
miles assay," Dr. Smith says. He,
called this move back to large
centralized hospitals a backward
sten.
Huron Middlesex MPP Jatl
Ridcleil who accompanied his new
7 leader 'said he 'thinks the health'
ministry is hacking clown on their
