Will Rogers was a famous philosopher-comedian of the
1930s
He entertained in all the famous spots around the world
and starred in some excellent movies One of hts most fa-
mous expressions was. "I never met a man' I didn't like "
And another was. -I only know what I read in the news-
papers
That is exajtIN the way I feel this week
' After writing a number of columns since last October
about artificial inse9nation units, notably WesNrn'Ontarto
Breeders Inc and United Breeders Inc . I read the report of
the annual meeting of United Breeders in the newspaper and
find that that organization is doing exactl> what has been
suggested bN a-number of tanners through the pages of this
column United is setting up courses for do-it-yourself breed-
ing techniques
At no time since last October has United been in touch with
me to explain this program and it is refreshing to find that
they are taking some steps to cut down on costs incurred for
the unit which in turn. are passed oritto the farmers in the
form tit decreased costs
The general manager of. United reported that 211'farmers
had turned out for a do-it-yourself course last fall, a-
natel only about six A.}f those taking the course indicated
they would be doing their own breeding The rest ct them at-
tended ,ally to learn "
I believe: United Breeders are to be congratulated in 'this
prograny Two similar courses will be offered this veo r to
answer demands or the service But expansion of the Idea
will depend demand and the need it fills in the artificial
insemination industry
What 'breeders should be doing is getting out zo these
courses' and seeing to it that en-rolment in them is tilled
Farmer , base been in the forefront over the years in adapt-
ink plod ideas to lesSen production costs This is an tAcellent
war to it TeChli Chin S7 will likely be necessary in some
areas for some tune to come but travel costs and salary

costs are two of the biggest items in the overhead of breed-
ing units Here is one way to decrease those costs and farm-
ers should be taking advantage of these methods
Most breeding units this year are to trouble financially.
A brief look at their annual reports makes this statement
easily understood United. for instance. had a three-per-cent
revenue increase in 1975 but a la-per-cent' increase. in ex-
penditures This resulted in a' $298.000 loss for last year.
When -any organization of this size racks up a loss of al-
most 000.000, some cost cutting must be done United will
meet this with a reduction in slat' t plus an increase in service
fees
United had to do tbe same thing as Western Ontario Breed-
ers These organizations had to increase service, fees for
the third time in one year
Now when farmers talk about .tremendo,us increases in
input costs, you may have sons' idea 01 what they are talking
about
Of course, there were some extenuating circumstances.'
Beef inseminations dropped oft considerably in 1975. And
why' wouldn't they-" With beef prices as lose as they %vete last
ve.ir. couldn't those brain trusts hired by the breeding units • see 'The writing on the wall and reah.ze that beef services • would drop'
It isn't that easy. of course It takes at lutist three or four
years to provide tests to prove.,%;.01Ing sires and Such a pro-
gram cannot be dropped and started again when beef prices
increase Maybe there are some Y..1„Id •reasons for the huge
deficits this year
In anY-ev some drastic' cat cosIs must be made
in the n .ar-futtuie. because the Pig bree-din,e units are in ob-
Y 'oils financial trouble •
I still believe one of the best 'yy ay s ...,s.ts would be to
'embark on d massive trainini pi...Y.:far:1.1, teach good. re-
