Bill rises at five A.M. ash trudge* one hundred yards to the barn. The snow is higher than the tops of his rubber boots. you can always measure the depth of the snow by the wet marks -00 the farmers' pant 'legs. After Milking eighteen cows, he washes the equipment. Then he feeds a cartful of ensilage, which he loaded the night before, to the dairy cattle and the other livestock that fills - the barn. • • Presently he wallows through more snowbanks between the barn and the implement shed. *He passes his pickup which is just anther white hump in the -----yard.The snow from last night's storm filled the box and drifted over-the cab. Before he can move a tractor from the shed, he shovels the snow away from the door. With a blower mounted on a tractor, he clears a path for the milk truck from the road . to the barn. When the milkman empties the bulk tank, Bill washes it groping through the steam from the hot water. Because the milkm n won't return for two days, Bill may l able to sleep in tomorrow morning - un t six o'clock. • Feeding the cattle is the next item on„his, age a. He climbs into the loft to push dowhe hay to feed them and the straw to dden them. He also-scoops chop from a bin nd mixes ,it with mineral. Soon he's climbing again; this time into the silo. Some farmers have automatic silo el) a unloaders, while others still use -forks. Another convenience that most 'farmers appreciate is an automatic stable cleaner. All Bill has to do is scrape the floor and push a button. The snow causes some complications, though. Because the lanes between the barnyard and, the fields are blocked, he hasn't been able to draw the frozen manure away from the pile. 4i Instead he blows a tunnel through the barnyard. If he's lucky, he'll get close enough to move some of the manure with a tractor and loader. If nut, he'll resort to a fork and some elbow grease. When the snow diminishes, he'll scurry to spread the heap over the fields. At four o'clock, he begins the evening chores; it's feeding time again. He also fills the feed cart for tomorrow morning. 'By'( six-thirty he's milking,, and M11 11(191110, he trudge's back through the snow into the house, He pulls off his damp clothes, collapses into a chair and . dreams about spring. This was an uneventful day. No frozen water bowls or pipes needed thawing. The chop box was full; he didn't have to grind any 'grain. The tractor started on the first try, and the blower didn't break. He didn't run out of fuel for the tractors. Thus he didn't have to blow snow for, the fuer truck. The plow missed the mailbox, and no motorist straggled in asking him to pull his car out of a snowdrift. This was one of Bill's leisurely days. Kilbarchan Notes a • (By Mabel Turnbull) Vistors with Miss Turnbull Mr. Harold Barry who recently returned from England where he had gone to spend the winter with his sister in Cumberland, He returned to his home at 'Schadeview"Lnke Mutes where he was greeted by winter in all its glory and all its headaches. The dilemma was, If you drove out it was taking the chance' of being showed 'out' whereas if you stayed 'in' y on r'were .titking the chahce of being snowed 'in'. It makes one wonder how the early pioneers were able to cope with the inconvenience of winter at its worst with no hydro for heat or light. They managed. They must have been a' sturdy Jot. Many of whom hadn't even a cabin for shelter. Recently your correspondent passed another milestone. On Sunday her niece and nephew Don and Marilyn Hillis braved the storm, to come and help her celebrate. They came by way of "Schadeview" where they visited their uncle, Mr. H. Barry; who was quite snug arid comfortable. Mission accomplished they lost no time in returning home- to Ingersoll to, try to beat the weather which had by that time abated its fury. Their coming left ' me a problem.. Does one have to add two years to their already crowded years if they have two' birthday cakes? Jean sent me one and Kilbarchan always provides one with candles complete. The staff line up and carry the lighted cake to the celebrant who blows out the candles. In this case they needed , only one blow. - Traditionally one blow to extinguish has a 'meaning which at the moment:escapes me. What do I do now? Our new owner, Mr. Th omas P. Tannampuzah joined the line with his greetings. The group sings "Happy 'Birthday" as they carry, in the cake. Thank you everyone for your kindness. • While on the subject of age I would like to submit this poem which has a wonderful philosophy especially for those who 'think they are getting 'over the "On Age" Age is a quality of mind, If you have left your 'dreams , behind, , If hope is cold, And you no longer plan, ahead • If your ambitions all are dead Then you are old; But if y ou make of life the best And in your life you still have- , zest, No matter how the years go by, No matter how the birthdays fly B.
