S.D.11.S. welcomes three new
students from Brazil: They are
exchange students and will be
here for about' three monhts.
" The first student is Maria
Bernadete Maia or better known „
as. Bete. She is stayingat the ,
home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Hulley, at R.R.#1, Seaforth. Bete
lives in the city of Belo Horizonte
in Brazil with her mom and dad,
'seven brothers and three sisters.
She is seventeen years of age.
Reading, travelling, dancing and
music are her interests. Bete has
been to Europe where she visited
Portugal, Italy, 'Spain, France,
Germany and Africa.
This 'is Bete's first trip to
Canada and she loves it. When
she left Brazil it was 35°C. She
had never seen snow. When she
arrived at Toronto Airport .on
December 18 it was far below0°C.
On the way home from the airport
she and Randa,' the other
Brazillian girl, had their first taste
of a Teal snow storm. It was
,blowing and snowing most of the
way hpme from Toronto. What a
way eo first see Canada.
Bete finds our . schools very
-different from Brazillian schools..
In. Brazil you, can't choose the
subjects you take. You char* the
,.,type of course you want' 'like •
Secretarial, mechanical and you
have to take all the subjects
related to that course. In Brazil,
the teachers rotate from room to
room for each"( lass. The students
stay where they-am In most area
schools -the opposite systenV is
used.
Bete wants to be an English
teacher so is interested in
communication courses. She
speaks. Portuguese as her 'native
language but also speaks English
very fluently.,
' Bete has fitted in very well with
the C'anad'ian way of. life,
especially the weather: She has
been snowmobiling, curling;
,ijancing and during. the Christmas
break :she attended Toe Alpha, a
youth conference,' which was held
in Niagara Falls..
.Randana Karim Zika is staying
at the,' home of Mr. and Mrs..
fc.eith Ruston, She is eighteen
years old and her. birthday is
October 25. Randana lives in the
