DAYS OE WINTER FUN OR EVERYONE Ir S.D.11.S. welcomes three new students from Brazil: They are exchange students and will be here for about' three monhts. " The first student is Maria Bernadete Maia or better known „ as. Bete. She is stayingat the , home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hulley, at R.R.#1, Seaforth. Bete lives in the city of Belo Horizonte in Brazil with her mom and dad, 'seven brothers and three sisters. She is seventeen years of age. Reading, travelling, dancing and music are her interests. Bete has been to Europe where she visited Portugal, Italy, 'Spain, France, Germany and Africa. This 'is Bete's first trip to Canada and she loves it. When she left Brazil it was 35°C. She had never seen snow. When she arrived at Toronto Airport .on December 18 it was far below0°C. On the way home from the airport she and Randa,' the other Brazillian girl, had their first taste of a Teal snow storm. It was ,blowing and snowing most of the way hpme from Toronto. What a way eo first see Canada. Bete finds our . schools very -different from Brazillian schools.. In. Brazil you, can't choose the subjects you take. You char* the ,.,type of course you want' 'like • Secretarial, mechanical and you have to take all the subjects related to that course. In Brazil, the teachers rotate from room to room for each"( lass. The students stay where they-am In most area schools -the opposite systenV is used. Bete wants to be an English teacher so is interested in communication courses. She speaks. Portuguese as her 'native language but also speaks English very fluently., ' Bete has fitted in very well with the C'anad'ian way of. life, especially the weather: She has been snowmobiling, curling; ,ijancing and during. the Christmas break :she attended Toe Alpha, a youth conference,' which was held in Niagara Falls.. .Randana Karim Zika is staying at the,' home of Mr. and Mrs.. fc.eith Ruston, She is eighteen years old and her. birthday is October 25. She has relat-aives in Toronto with whom she is planning to visit while she is here. She likes Canada, especially the, snow. Radana also plans to go to .vim" Florida with. Sandra Ruston when . the band goes during the March break. She says she is really looking forward to that trip. One of the three Brazilian students currently going, to S.D.H.S. Is Radana Karim of Safi Paulo-She is studying with, Sandra' Ruston (right), Seaforth, who ° rs hosting Radana for:the next two months. Another BrazIlian girl. staying in our area for the next few month-8 Is Bete Mart (left). ,Her hOst for her, stay is Sandra Hulley, Winthrop, beside her. , morn and dad, two brothers and one sister. interests' are, dancing, ice skating, travelling • and collecting stones. Back home in Brazil , Kadana says she has a large stone collection So. far Radana has •been involved in several winter activities. She has curled, Snowmobiled and will be learning how to cross country ski in physical education so she is looking forward to that too. The third Brazillian exchange student is Jesse .Sotle Marion Lagos Neto. The , last name mentioned (Neto) simply means that Jesse is the third one in his family to be called by that name. Jesse lives in Fort' Aliza, Brazil with his mom and, dad, one brother and three sisters. While in` Canada. he is staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McNichol of R.R. 4, Walton. Jesse's intersts are swimming. boating, horse-back riding; and motor cycling. 1-le is a good help on, the farm and likes the outdoors. Jesse is attending SDHS with. Ray McNichol and is taking some level four and level five subjects. He wants to be an engineer. , Jesse likes Canada. So far he has snowmobiled. bowled • and danced. . Air three Students have been getting along great in Canada. They have adapted very well, especially • to the weather. All three of them say they don't find it 'as cold as when `they first 'arrived. They aren't sure how long they will stay in Canada. They carne through International Fellowship and they will decide when the exact date will be when they return to Brazil. It will probably be in about two monthS though.. JesSe "nay stay longer. Bete, Radana and"Jesse have been asked to speak at several meetings for church groups, schools, cubs and scout's. and some private get-togethers. They have many slides 'and pictures and much information which they enjoy discussing.
