After wia went to press last week I got mpre information which shows that the Goderich PsyChiatric Hospital is" very' important to the well being • of those of us who, live.in this rural area. Dr. Jan Dukszta, the NDP's health critic at Queen's Park has statistics that back up- the fact that the Hospital is fully used and will cause hardship if it is closed. 90.Q/0 of the 200 beds at the hospital are in constant use. Dr. Dukszta says this is a tribute to the wide variety of out patient services that the hospital operates. 500 out-patients are registered there making a total -of 700 people, who use the hospital at any one time. Most of these 700 will have faMilies who of course are affected by the care or lack of care they get.' It's not exaggeration to say that at least 2000 people , patients and their families, will be' hurt directly if the hospital closes. We don't argue at all the spending, including spending on health services has to be checked. According to a recant story in the Canadian Journal of Public Health, Canadians get very good health care when ranked against the rest of the world. , Looking at' statistics which show, rates of mortality and -life expectancy,' Canada gets about as good health care as England and Wales but spends nearly twice as much per head or about 40% more of our, Gross National Product.., •' Obviously we . can't let this situation go.'on. We might find our health care picture as bad as ,that in the U.S.A. where:they' spend by far the most money per head of 'eight Western countries and ,get the worst results.- Obviously. we've got, to' cut somewhere, but is dePriving a' good part of rural Western Ontario of psychiatric services the place to' cut? . . • We ,haven't even started to talk about employees at GPH-. The eenomie blow to them and their' families will he almost as hurtful. There are. about .300.of them ad we heard lasit, week that most got notices. on Monday. They Were, simply told that they' wouldn't be needed' Ater March and' there was. no Mention of placements elsbwherc; Thek • were no prorniSe< Of employment at the resoitree centre fot the mentally retarded --.-the suggested new itse for the' GPH. • Huron Middlesex MPP' Jack. Councillor Rotten Bell said that with gravel becoming scarce he thinks the time will come when roads have to be closed because there will not be gravel available to keep them in condition. Councillor Bert Branderhorst said that with the cars today the numerous sideroads built for the hor,,c and buggy days are not all.. necessary.
