Mu, EDITon,- _Following will be found an account of our trip west, which, if interesting; to you, may be published ; We left Toronto, 011 Tuesday,. July 17th, at 11 p. m., bound flu' Calgary, Edmonton and I3anif, and after comfortably dispos- ing; of ourselves for the night sped on our way. Awaking next morn- ing we found ourselves at Graven - burst, where we notice the first signs of lumbering; from here it continues to Braeebridge, which seems to be head -quarters for that industry, and on to North Ilay. Near here are the famous "Muskoka Lakes," a favorite resort for tourists. 'Truly it is a lovely spot, and a, fit subject for the artist's brash, the clear, calla surface of the water and luxuriant foliage forming a pleasing, restful scene, As we pass along, the country assumes, a more rvilcl and broken appearance, • light, electric • railways running where meadows, lakes auhcl rocky 1 hrouglt the city and out o the parks, ridges alternate. The scenery is ;in abeautifulc churches, ug heels colleges, public ebulfirst striking and hi 50111e places extreme- ( a ' ly interesting. On we go, an engine thing that forcibly presents itself to in front and rear, passing through i t11e stranger is the way in r hie h the the pretty little village of Huntsville city is laid out, In such n flat, level to North Bay, a railway divisional country I could see no reason why a centre, situated on the placid lance' place should be all angles, giving Nipissing, (a beautiful and extensive • the idea that it was laid out without sheet of water), looping serenely on . TUE WIN(aUUAM TIMES, AUGUST 24, 184)4. about three months ago. In passing through the so-called disputed terri- tory, we observe nothing but rapid rivers, numerous small lakes and scrubby, useless timber. Soon we come to tile pretty "Lake of the Woods," the largest body of water toadied by the railway between Lake Superior x11(1 the Pacific Coast. At seven next morning rve find ourselves at Rat Portage and shortly afterward at Keewatin. At the former : we. notice a slumber of saw shills run by water flowing from Lake of tllo Woods to Winnipeg River. At the latter, 0 large flouring mill, built of quarry stoke, which is available Here. After leaving' East Selkirk, the line turns southward, following the Red River toward Winnipeg. The coun- try flattens out and assumes the characteristics of the prairie about seventy miles from Winnipeg, which place is reached on Friday at 10.80 a. all. Here we remain six days, being comfortably situated in a good hotel iii the centre of the city. Winnipeg has all the advantages mountains an both sides. The Fort is. situat2cl at tllo head of the valley, overlooked by the 1+'i1e Hills. It is a great summer resort, a lovely spot for camping, and the boating is splendid. Three miles from the Port is the Catholic Mission School, About two hundred. Indian children live here and receive instruction in all practical branches of school work, besides which the girls learn sewing and house -keeping and the boys different kinds of trades. After the children are old enough and sail- r , eiently advanced they are allowed to go and do for themselves, I neglect- ed to IRCilti011 that the Government pays the expenses of this school. From Grenfell to Regina, where I leave you, I will say nothing, as being night when rve journeyed, everything was asleep. C)f Regina lUO1'e later on. Hoping this may be interesting to 501110, I remain, Yours Respectfully, AMY TIMi1i\5. Regina, August Kith, 18;14. of a thriving, modern city—electric l ---- TEESl'A A.
