' In fa 1, I have been :chastized on a number oroccasions for -supporting farmers "'even, whenthey are wrong in their requests. I make no apologies about my affinity for farm- ' ers. They have been left sucking, the hind. teat too long in the economic pressures of thi's country. But sometimes they are wrong. They cannot have it both ways. Agriculturalists are the first to scream load -and long about good farmland beigg gobbled up.by towns and cities, by power corridors and ex- pressway,9, by rows and rows of ticky-tacky houses and as- phalt-ct&ered plazas and shopping centres: .. I support them in this hue and cry. ,Only about five or six per cent of•this great land mass called Canada is fit for agii- ' cultture and the preservation of prime farm land should be, at the top of the list for forward -thinking people. . ' i But let any developerr•come along with his pockets jin- gling and most farmers are wait{ at the, farm' gats for H them with their hands out. Bill Tifompson is an outspoken planner. He is presently chief planner for the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, in Ontario that has distinct problems for tanners Each case must/be dealt with on its own merits, especially when o farmer wants a glee of land on which to retire or a farrher's son or daughter wa is a piece of land on the home farm to build upon, especially-tf someone in the new home is going to help on the farm, But too often the sale to a son -or a father is just an excuse to build in the country' Which is just what brings about the measles development along rural roads and exactly what Mr. Thompson was talking'about. So, farmers cannot have it both ways. Either they are sin- cere. in their cries about presbrvigg farm land or they are - hypocrites. Any hypocrisy is not•'needed in farm circles these days. To be brutally frank, I do not know what 1 would do if someone came .along tomorrow and offered me a big pile of cash for my couple of acres in the country: At the moment, we are producing only one crop of poor hay annually to feed our horses so the land would not betaken out of production. But it would bring about that measles development de, plored by Mr. Thompson. And I,.do,not believe that 26 acres of arable land is being' lost every hour.of every day throughout every year, the cry pu forth by the New Democrats during the recent provin- r " ni l moi•. i .., r 0, ,r > i*Affi f Y y i" jYyy Ifj iy "I f Ti '' im ?,•': 4',,d> F I,,r n }Mf; :: I+ln'a11 1 r ilh9toll 4 ` • ' #nliu fd{ r1/{.dark tll< "!, ?►ii 'i•T'7TTMW'nP`IA TrM1.A.lN t d a jil opt3csked' %'rou' tAtlfity' 1 ` n i3aats of 'docatod ► " urP t , ' Prttt Rbnaan C+1i' Seth&t School al•tt?'Innuk'fisafes for ?a meptnf ,- ec4mbr Ira' ' • :; " '' "'A #ilo tlratn taai n the talr:n of 4SO01, wA koppfed , ,-•, ` • t 'dark''of. yX,tllian v¢'a ,'s k •, ins0up'ted to maltcxtplolFSs oo x e e tyy !' ;tllreo drauas tl#at-)as,r itYve .; was unable O :survey and, also rev irs tin'the Mills ]Drain, , yy'cconnts field• were: Road* $6,125-04, General 5$;74]1,19 'fo•1t a total, of $6.1,$65.25: a-ur, ttrucii Amu R#lcwr uritis an area •. c1 I election.
