S CHUBS IN THE PIECE
There is• at least one person in
Spaforth who is unhappy, that Bob
Nixon has resigned as the leader
of the Ontario Liberal party. That
person is my mother.
The reason that she's upset
isn't a political one. No, mother is
unhappy because the end of Mr.
N Nixon's days in the limelight also
signal an end to her's. You see
every time CBC television news
does an in-depth report on Bob
Nixon on The National, mother
appears too. She's been on The
National news twice so far since
the middle of the summer and her
career could only have gone
onward and upward.
But then Bob Nixon blew her
chance at immortality. He
resigned. It's no big thing, yeau
say, appearing on a coast to coast
news report talking earnestly with
the erstwhile Liberal leader while
the news commentator drones in
the background. After all, nobody
mentions your name or calls
attention to whom Bob Nixon is
addressing. No, 'mother appears
simply as Ms. Anonymous
Voter.

Fitness In your heart you know k's
after the film clip featuring
mother and Mr. Nixon appeared
on the National for the first time,
she was out in Saskatchewan at a
newspaper convention. Every
second person she saw, acquain-
tances from all over the country
she hadn't seen for years came up
to her and said.."was that you
talking to what's his name on the
national news?"
Yup, it's the big time. Mother's
most recent TV news appearance
was last week, when Nixon
announced • his retirement. That
In Dublin
Bishop John Sherlock of Lon-
don will officially open the Huron
Perth County Roman" Catholic
Separate School Board office in
Dublin on Wednesday, No/ember
5th.
Trustee Michael Connolly of
Kippen, chairman of the commit-
tee in charge reported at a board
meeting in Dublin. Tuesday night
that„ the dedication ceremony
would take place 2 p.m. in the
board room with the Bishop
commenting on Catholic educa-
tion. This ceremony is to be
followed by Open House and
tours with refreshments in the
lounge from 2:45 to 4:30p.m. and
again from 7:00 to 9:00p.m.
Mr. Connolly repotted a lunch-
eon would, precede the cere-
monies at Rey. Gordon Dill's
residence in Dublin at 12:30 p.m.
The new board offices are
located in the former Continua-
tion School and adjoining Ursu-
line Order Convent. The two
religious consultants for the
board, Miss Teresa Woods and
Miss Mary Kennedy, both of
Stratford, gave ,reports on their
religion program in the 19
separate schools in Huron and
Perth based on the book Canadian
Catechism.
The consultants said they
would like to report to the board
at a later date on the program
content as carried . out from
Kindergarten to Grade 8. Miss
'
we're afraid, was her swan song.
It may be the end of letters from
long lost and forgotten friends
saying "was that you, Winn?"
Ws not as if mother, had really
tried hard to be in camera view
the clay the CBC film crews took
what was to become their stock
footage of Bob Nixon in action.
All she did was to attend a
political picnic at the Liberal
leader's farm back in the spring,
1?efore the Ontario election was
even announced. At best we

Woods spoke of the spiritual
growth of the teachers through
workshops and a credit course in
scripture at university level. She
said 30 teachers from the board
area are taking the course •at St.
Jerome's College in Kitchener.
Student retreat days for Grades
7 and 8 candidates preparing for
confirmation were discussed and
reported to be favourably approv-
ed by priests, teachers and
students. Miss Woods said
twilight retreats will be held at
Our Lady of Mount Carmet on
October 16 for Zone 2; St. Mary's
School, Goderich, on October 29
for Zone 1; St. Aloysius School,
Stratford, with the theme Build-
ing Christian Community for
Zone 4; and on November 20 St.
Columban School, for Zone 3.
The 'consultants invited each
trustee to attend the retreat in his
zone "To pray together for better
understanding".
Board chairman, David Teahen
of, Stratford, informed Miss Ken-
nedy and Miss Woods that the
religion program is one of the
most important programs in the
separate schools.

makes for a better community. He
echoed Reeve Ginn's sentiments
that overall co-ordination in the
county is necessary because
municipalities, by them selves,
are just too'45mall to Support
facilities once they are establish-
ed.
"We should look to establish
facilities where they' will benefit
the most people," Reeve
McCutcheon stated.
Hullett Reeve John Jewitt said
he was opposed to finanCing
recreation by taxing property.
"And I'm afraid that's what this
report will lead us to," he said.
"How much should come from
the taxpayers' pockets and how
much should be paid by the
users?" asked Jim Mair, Morris
Township Deputy-reeve.
Reeve Warren Zinn of Ashfield
Township urged township coun-
cils to study the report and look at
chance at " the National news
before the Bob Nixon, with voter)
film clip disappears from CBC's
files. The TV news people will
have to do 'some sort of a. post
mortem when, Nixon's successor
is chosen when the Liberals
convene in January.
Now, if she could just get into a
photogenic conversation with
whoever that successor might be,
mother, could once again be a
news • film story throughout the
next election compaign.
New Titles
The two superintendents of
education on the board, Joseph
Tokar and Alexander Easton and
the business administrator Jack
Lane were given new administra-
tive titles. Mr. Tokar will be
superintendent of special services
Mr. Easton, superintendent of
program, and Mr. Lane, superin-
tendent of business and finance.
James McDade, teacher at St.
Columban School, was given
permission to be nominated as a
candidate for assignment to the
teachers department of National
Defence Dependants' School over
seas for a two-year, tour to duty.
Miss Mary Hoy of R.R. 1,
Sebringville, was hired as a music
teacher for 20 per cent of the day.,
The school custodians' basic
salary was, increased six per cent
over and above the existing
contract effective October 1.
Stratford trustee Ron Marcy
was darned board representative
on the steering committee set up
to design an Implementation '
Model for the board's system of
schools.
The administration is studying
the facts and figures.
"It should be a great help,"
said Reeve Zinn.
New Motion
Later in the morning, Reeve
Gerry Ginn formally presented a
motion that the recreation study
go to the restructuring committee
for further recommendation.
"This is something that involv-
ed more than one community",
said Reeve Ginn, "and I thing the
restructuring committee could
give it a broader iook."
"This matter belongs to devel-
opment and it should remain
there," argued Reeve Ed. Oddlei-
fson. "They started it and it
shouldn't be passed on to another
committee.
"The restructuring committee
is a co-ordinating committee,"
said Reeve McCutcheon. "If you
are not going to refer this matter
to it, then disband it."
Just before press time SDHS
girls trumpet band leader
George Hildebrand told the
Expositor that it is "60% certain"
that the band will be going to play
in the Edison
Pageant of Lights parade in Fort
Myers, Florida, in February. The
band has been invited to
represent Canada in the popular
parade.
George says negotjations are
continuing with parade
organizers.
the restructuring of the schools in
the system.
Trustee F .J . Vere of Stratford,
chairman of the building and
maintenance committee reported
the drain at the board office has
been completed at a cost of
$1,500.
The Board maintained support
for the Kiwanis • Festival at
Stratford again this year by
making a grant of $100.
Superintendent Tokar stated
professional development day will
be held on October 20.
'Superintendent Easton
attended a preliminary meeting in
Toronto on September 29 in
. preparation for Education Week
to be held in April. He Concluded
his. report on the meeting by
saying a successful Education
Week depended on the county
and school committee.
Trustee John O'Drowsky of St.
Marys said the curriculum review
committee would have a meeting
on October 22 at 8 P.M. at St.
Joseph's School in Stratford.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30
p.m. to go into committee-of-the-
whole.
At this point, Warden Anson
McKinley reminded council that
the committee meeting at which
the restructuring committee was
urged to co-ordinate fire, police,
recreation and garbage collection,
is stiYf not official since a report of
that meeting still hasn't come
before council as a whole for
recommendation.
Reeve Zinn, chairman of,the
development committee, favored
sending the recreation report to
the restructuring committee. It
was his contention that the
restructuring committee would
have more time to devote to this
all important report.
However, the motion was lost
when put to council.
Reeve Zinn then said that the
development committee would be
seeking the aid and advice of the
restructuring committee when
dealing with the matter.

If so, there's an organization IA
Seaforth that can help. It's called
the Non Nibblers; a group of
women who meet every Monday
night at a p.m. at SDHS. As yet,
there's no chapter for men but
one may be formed.More
information on that is available
from recreation director Clive

The Non Nibblers started about
five years ago, encouraged by
Local MD Rodger Whitman.. The
25-30 members weigh in and have
programs on nutrition, diet and
weight loss. They have special
speakers and films and give each
other suggestions on recipes;
books to read or TV shows to
watch.
Members pay a small fee, 25c
per week, and are fined if they've
gained since the last meeting
---five cents for the first pound
and ten cents per pound after
that. The biggest weight loser is
