Competes' in BC tourney A seventeen year-old Seaforth lad just competed in the Canadian Junior Golf championship held in Victoria , British Columbia last week. Steve Bennett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bennett of Seaforth playd two days in a lbw day tournament against 160 top golfers in Canada. Each day golfers from 17 to 19 played 18 holes. He missed qualifying for the final 36 holes by three shots. Mr. Bennett was invited to` the British Columbia tournament after his finish last year in their London tournament. Mr. Bennett went to the . tournament with his friend Mel 'Meriam of Seaforth, and they plan to stay in British Columbia for about ten days. The opening game of the Industrial League plaY0/0 proaucedthe first upset when the Queen's squeaked out a 16.15 win in, extra innings over a surprised Travellers nine. The Travellers made Mistakes that proved costly to allow the Queens their first win. The Travellers opened a 3-4 first inning lead on three singles by Larry Broome, Kevin Kerr and Bruce McMannus. The top of the second inning however proved disasterous when the Queens Scored 9 big runs on only one bit. The Travellers gave up four walks then committed four errors when Don Nicholson provided the only hit, a single. Nine runs crossed the plate giving the Queens a 9-3 lead. The third frame proved bad for the Queens as the Travellers moved back into the game scoring 5 runs to narrow the gap to I 'run. Singles by Larry Broome, Ken Doig and Ray Hutchinson. Kevin Kerr and Dave Broome added triples and Bruce McMannus hit a home run as the Travellers looked as if they where taking over. The Queens added a single itnearned run in the fourth on three walks. The fifth inning was almost a replay of the fourth when the Queens moved ahead 11-8 on just one hit, a single by Don Nicholson The sixth inning proved produc- tive for both teams as the Queens* scored four runs on only one hit again, as Eric Chuter singled providing the power. The Travellers replied with three runs with the big blow coinng from Bruce McMannus's triple leaving the Queens ahead 541. The seventh inning saw the Travellers stage a late inning rally scoring 4 runs on two hits to force the game into extra innings. In the first extra frame both teams left a man on base but neither could manage to score. The ninth saw John Munroe single and then steal home with two outs to move the Queens 1 run up. The Travellers failed to get a man on base as the Queens pulled - out the win, Eric Chuter was the winning pitcher allowing 15 runs on 15 hits while his team could muster only 4 hits they scored lb runs as, Jack Ungarian and Kuhl Kerr had' control problems and errors provided the difference, Villagers Win 16.6 The late game proved a little more one sided when the Villag. ers opened a 1-0 series lead with a relatively easy 16-6 win over the Teachers. Both teams opened strong as the Villagers scored 4 runs in the first on five hits while the Teachers replied with 2 runs on 3 hits. In the second frame the Teachers evened the count at 4 all out scoring their opponents 2-0 and it looked like a real cliff hanger. However the Village seemed to regain their composure as they took control of in the third inning moving in front 7-4. The Teachers just couldn't muster an attack and made several costly errors as they blew the game.
