Protective gear
prevents accidents
The period 25 to 31 July has
been designated National Farm
Safety Week and is sponsored by
the Canada Safety Council in
co-operation with AGriculture
Canada. This year both the
Council and the Ministry wish to
draw to the attention of the farm
worker a very important aspict of
safety-personal protectivg
equipment.
The farmer should consider the
use of adequate personal
protective equipment not only for
humane reasons but also to
minimize time losses and the
expenses of injuries.
Almost 60% of work injuries to
farm family members or
employees result in two or more
days of lost time. With an
estimated 24,000 disabling
injuries occurring each year the
loss of production and income is
considerable not to mention the
pain and inconvenience.
The farmer should determine the
need for personal protective
equipment, select the proper type
for the hazards involved and train
employees and family workers to
know why, wher and how to wear
and care for it,
Personal protective equipment
is meant to be used only when it is
Field crop club
meets in
Tuckersmith
The July meeting of the
Tuckersmith 4H Field Crops Club
was held at the Ministry of
Agriculture Board ,office in `Clin-
ton. The meeting was opened
with the 4H fledge.
The group made plans to go to
a grain elevator for the Augu .st
meeting. Le n MacGregor talked
to the group about parlimentary
procedures. Len told the right
way and wrong way of-conducting
meetings. The meeting °was then
,adjourned.
impossible or. impracticable to
eliminate a hazard. Wearing this
equipment tends to prevent injury
but the hazard remains a
potential danger. It is better to
remove a hazard than to try to
safeguard against it by means of
special clothing or equipment.
Most injuries
occur in house
On the farm, more disabling
injuries occur in the house than
anywhere else. This fact was
released by the Canada Safety •
Council which, in co-operation
with Agrictilture Canada,
sponsors National Farm Safety
Week, 25-31 July .
Hazards which lead to painful,
costly and even permanent
disability should be eliminated
from the home. Here are a few
tips from the Council.
1. Tack down scatter rugs or use
skid-proof backing.
2. Run electrical cords along
, walls - never under carpets or
across doorways.
3. In the kitchen, quickly wipe-
- up grease or liquid spills from
the floors to prevent slipping
injuries.
4. Use a stool or stepladder for
climbing - not a chair.
5, Keep stairs and halls well
hefted and free of clutter.
6. Stairs should be equipped
with sturdy handrails and covered
with Packed-down carpeting.
7. Install anti-skid strips in the
bathroom tub or shower and
grab rails in strategic wall
positions.
Don't forget outdoors, make a
tour of the house and check for
steps and stairways in disrepair,
dark areas that need lighting and
scattered tools and debris that
. should be picked-up.
These few pointers may help to
keep production up' and costs
down.
