"When you're young is the only time to do it," owner Ken Roth says. Ai Ken and Cheryl Roth ' are young, but they have a great deal of experience. Ken, almost 26, and a native of Shakespeare, has been working for eight years, "ever since I dropped out of school" in the grocery business in Kitchener. He says that although the Seaforth store is the first he's owned, he worked for Highway Market in Kitchener for five years and managed the second a Knechtel store there for three. Ken's wife Cheryl is nearly 23 and she has worked throughout their marriage. She is originally from Rostock. She will be book- keeper and work as a cashier in the new store. The Roths have two children, Angie, nine months and Tracey, three. 4 The pace has been pretty hectic as they work to get the store open this week, the Roths said. They lope to move to Seaforth next week, to an apartment above Hildebrand Paint and Paper, but they have been commuting every day from Kitchener until their new home is redecorated. "It's a long drive every night," Cheryl Roth says and she com- mented that it was pretty hard to get things ready in the store with the small children around. The Roths now have a babysitter. The couple started about June 9 getting the vacant store, formerly the Candian Tire outlet, transformed to a modern grocery store. They've employed a large number of local people getting the store stocked and ready and will probably have a part time staff of about 10 after the store is opened. The couple say they are looking forward to living in Seaforth, where everyone has been very friendly. "Everyone who walks in talks to you," Cheryl says. Because they both come from- 4 small towns they said they would rather live in .a small place than a big:city ulike Kitchener where you might not know your next door neighbour. The new store, the 18th K food store in the province, has about 2100 square feet of displayspace. They will carry a complete line of foods, frozen goods, dairy and fruit and vegetable products, but won't sell fresh meats. Explain- ing that good butchers are hard to get and a meat section expensive to operate, Ken said "If business' justifys it, perhaps we'll get into, it." Packaged meats and frozen meats will be stocked. Everything in the store will be pre-priced. Store specials will be in effect from Thursday to Tuesday, not just until Saturday, 4 he says. Ken explained that K food stores give independent retailers increased buying power so that they can offer better prices and specials: Carnival and Knechtel I k, 111 are the two K Foods "house" brand names,. The bright orange on the front of the new store is called "Knechtel orange", he said with a grin. He said he thought there was room for two grocery stores in Seaforth, "Competition is good, wouldn't want to be the only store in a town because you get blamed for a lot of things that aren't your fault."
