(Staff pha`to) In "best game of year" St. Columban beats Yugoslays Bantams The Winthrop Bantams have dropped into a bad losing streak. They have lost their last 3 games. Their latest loss was to Belgrave • on the 18th of July. The starting pitcher John Blan- chard pitched well in the first' inning giving up but one run. The second inning was a disaster for Winthrop players who have up 7 runs without making an out. Kirk Hussey was called into pitch in relief. However before Winthrop could retire the side Belgrave managed to score another 3 runs. But in Winthrop's at bat in the 2nd John Blanchard led off with a triple and then scored when Glen Elligson singled. I guess you could say John redeemed himself with that triple. From then on Belgrave didn't have any really big innings but in the 7th inning they Complied 6 runs. Winthrop had a big inning in the 3rd and 5th, scoring 6 in the 3rd and 9 in the 5th. Neil McLean lead Belgrave with 5 runs. Glen EiligSon, Gerry Barringer and David Hulley each scored 3 rant. St. Columban started fast, taking the wind advantage in the first half and had several good scoring chances in the first 10 minutes of play. Paul Coyne was in alone on the London goalie, only to be stopped by a fantastic save. Casey Van Bakel hit the cross bar from close in and both Dave O'Reilly and Bill Docking whistled shots just over the bar. Finally, about midway through the first half, Bill Docking scored a beautiful goal, hading in a On Monday July 8, the B.P. Oilers played t14 Mitchell Bell team in Mitchell, Kelly Dalton got the only home run far the Oilers, helping them to defeat Bell 10-4. The Oilers played again on July 15 in Dublin against the Dublin Over team, defeating them 30-6. Ken Dalton connetted for the Oilers home run. Mitchell Redi-Chef played at Winthrop on July 21 against the Oilers. The Oilers lost this game The Brodhagen Brewers had another win last week when they, downed Conry 4-1 Friday in South Perth Fastball league play. Win- ning pitcher was Ron Scholl who allowed five hits and had four strike outs. Losing pitcher- Mark Daoust had four hits and 12 strike outs. Ron Scholl was also leading batter, for the Brewers with three home The Seaforth soccer Continent- als are balk in the swing of things after being defeated by Niagara Falls in a Ontario Cup, second round game. On Thursday July 10 the Continentals travelled to Kitch- ener to play Kitchener Thistles in Exihibition action and were de- feated by Seaforth 5-1. The goals for Seaforth were scored by #11 Stephen Underwood, getting a pair and #13 Brett Finlayson, #9 Johnny Nielson and #7 Dennis Nielson each with a single. corner kick by Paul Coyne from 6 yards out. Although holding a large edge in play the half ended with just the one goal being scored The failure of the referee to take control of the game led to the 2nd"half being a very chippy affair with numerous arguments and confrontation. With about 20 minutes gone in the half, London scored a goal which was disputed as being offside, but to no avail. This goal seemed to make the St. Columban team all the more determined and despite playing against the wind they began . to 8-5. Pete DeJong hit a triple bringing in two of the Oilers runs. This goal took the life out of the London club, and instead of trying for the equalizer, seemed content to try and cut down the St. Columban players with some dangerous tackling and kicking from behind. The win gave the local club' a much needed boost ,of confidence and it now seems that the second ahlf of the season will be a good one. This Sunday, July 27, will probably be the best game of the year in the area as St. Columban hosts the London Celtic club in a City Cup game. Celtic is presently in 1st place in the 1st division of the London and District Soccer Ass. while St. Columban is struggling in the 3rd division. Everyone will have to play a top game in order to stay close to the London team. A good crowd is anafed as there will be Some ne soccer on display. Kick-off time is 2 p.m. in St. Columban.
