In, the basement of the church a quilt owned by Mrs. Aggy Garnham and now belonging .to her nephew, Ken Beattie was shown. It was made and quilted by the Ladies Society of Christian Workers. Cavan Church 1905, with all the names of the congregation embroidered on the squares. Also there was the "Helping Hand" Mission Band Quilt, given to a former minister's wife Mrs. Livingston. When they left the congregation she gave it to the late Dinah Toll. Another quilt owned by Ernie Toll hung from the wall. It was embroidered by the Young People Society 1954-55 and was bought at a social by Ernie. Histories of the church books, The W.M.S. cook books and Souvenier Plates also the picture history church book were on sale with Olave Little in charge. In the parade Saturday at the Seaforth Centennial was a float by the Cavan United Church. On the float were the cloir and Miss Marjorie Papple organist, the session and board of stewards along with Rev. Unit one of Winthrop United Church were kept busy at the booth Saturday at ,the Seaforth Centennial. Welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Murray McCall and baby daughter, who have moved into the Ken Beatty residence West of Winthrop. Dennis led in prayer then Jim McDonald read the second scrip- ture lesson from St. Luke 18:9-17. The five GOdkin children sang "Thank you for Sunshine" fol- lowed by Dianne and Bruce singing and playing their guitars accompanied by their mother, Mrs. Laverne Godkin at the piano. The Sunday School sang, "Tell me the Stories of Jesus." The promotion exercises for the Sunday School were announced by Martin Baan in the absence of Mrs. Pauline Bennett. The Awards andSeals were presented by Mrs. Maxine Marks of the Kindergarten class, to Craig Hackwell for perfect attendance, 1st year diploma; Donna Godkin- perfect atten- dance 2nd year seal; Kim Fritz- one Sunday missed 2nd year seal. Miss Carol Wilbee presented the Primary one and 'two class pupils to Sandra Sholdice two- Sundays missed, 4th' year seal; Joyanne Van Vleit, two Sundays missed, 2nd year seal; Gary Godkin- Perfect attendance; four- th year seal; Tim Fritz one Sunday missed, second year seal; Blaine Hackwell, three Sundays missed second year seal. Mrs. Joyce Van Vleit presented awards to the Junoirs. Murray Sholdice, three Sundays missed, sixth year seal; Elaine Dennis, three Sundays missed, fourth year seal. Murray Dennis presented the awards to the intermediate class, Laura Dennis, three Sundays missed, ninth year seal. Dianne Godkin, perfect attendance, tenth year seal. The offering was received by Cliffe Ritchie, Bruce Clark and Don Dennis. The flowers were placed in the church ' by the McKillop ladies for the month of 9 Baseball, swimathon held at Vanastra Correspondent Mr.John Tern'pleman Mrs. Jo Van Valkengoed opened her home for the . Agri- culture and Canadian Industries meeting of the Staffa Women's Institute on Tuesday June 24. A highlight of the evening was a tour„, of the farrowing barns where members were able to see their complete pig operation. Another highlight was the presentatiOn of life memberships and pins to two faithful members, Mrs. Ruby Reed and Mrs. Roy MatDonald. Mrs. MacDonald was unable to be present. Mrs. Charles Douglas presented Mrs, Reed with her certificate while Mrs. John Miller pinned her life membership badge on her lapel. WI presents membership pins °Correspondent Mrs. Robert Holley Cavan Church Winthrop held Special homecoming' services, Sunday. Rev. W. L. McSpadden, S.T.M. took charge of the service. He is a former boy from Winthrop who now is serving the Hamilton-Wentworth family ser- vices and working with area clergymen in rural . and urban relations. Rev. McSpaddens' theme was "Love Your Neigh- bour". He and his wife, Joan live in Cayuga. ' Mrs. Peter Dunlop, the former Edith Hillen, who was the organist from 1934-39 was the organist for the services. Mrs. Dorothy McGregor, the former Dorothy Dodds, was guest soloist. The choir sang "When the Roll is Called up Yonder", and "Lily of the Valley", as special athems. Rev. J. Holden, the minister from 1955 to 1957, was present at the services and spoke a few words. Flower acknowledgements in the church Sunday were In memory of Mr. and Mrs. Soloman Shannon, Mr. and Mrs. William Johnston and Mr. and Mrs. Scott by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bolton. In memory of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Govenlock by the family and in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Hillen and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hulley by the Calvin Hillen family. A donation was given by Mrs. Frank Johnston in memory of Mr, and Mrs. William Johnst6n, Frank and Roma Johnston. After Church services, all pres- ent-were asked to the basement to partake in a delicious cold plate lunch. The head table was centered with a 100 year birthday cake decorated by Mrs. Orval Storey and was cut by Miss Ethel McClure and Oliver Anderson. A social hour was spent with over 250 former members, members, Correspondent Mrs. Karen Lehnen The ladies baseball have been busy and successful. Monday, June 16, the Vanastra Super Chicks, .sponsored by Harold's Shell Station, won against Blyth Busters. The score 30 to 11. Home runs by Dawn Westbrook. Wednesday, June 18, the Vanastra Super Chicks won a 7 inning game with Goderich Super Stars. The score 59 to 6. Homeruns by Carol Lince and Dawn Westbrook. Th,ursday, June 19, the Community Association Coffee Hour was held at 8 p.m. After discussions a committee of six was formed to investigate the feasability of . possible. incorporation of Vanastra as ,a, village. June 21 was the swim-a-thon at the pool Participants ranged in age from 10 years to cder 50's. Fred Smith of Goderich swam the most lengths with a total of 322. Mrs. Grace Hussey of Eginondville was in my own league at 2 lengths.Her donations came from friends and neighbours and area politicians. Thinks to. all participants and their sponsors for their time and interest and pledges. The lifeguards donated a free day. Volunteers for the day were Glenda Littlechild, Velma King,. Betty Feugan, Mr. and, Mrs. Will Schneider, Vic Evans, June McLennan, Mrs. Stu Broadfoot, Mrs. Fred Smith, the facilities manager at Vanastra Rene Brochu and aquatic's director, Harold Whitlock. Final results and winners in the various divisions have not been tabulated. The Vanastra Summer Recreation under Experience '75 Program 13 will begin July 2. The staff is Bill Cantelon, R.R.4, Seaforth, Angie Arts,. Lois Dalton and Lorrie Deller of Vanastra. Playground activities will' be held Weekdays (Monday to Friday} front 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is an open program where Children may come and go .depending on their interest, attention 'Span and huffily plans. Docken has accepted a call, and begins the first Sunday in July. Mac Sholdice welcomed every- one and was master of ceremon- for a program. The Godkin `family sang, "Talk to the Ani- mals" accompanied by Mrs. L, Godkin at the piano, followed by a step-dancing number by Sandra Sholdice. John Huether sang two solos, "Oomp-pah-pah and "Do Lord, Do lord" assisted by his mother at the piano. Mrs. Karen Uhler gave a reading, "The Sour Dough Story". The McGavin Family entertained with their songs, "Faith, Hope and Charity' and "Love is something if you give it away". Mrs. Martin Baan played a piano solo. Dianne Godkin and Bruce Godkin sang a duet, "Paper Roses" with their guitar accompaniment, assisted at , the piano 'by their mother. Jeanne McDonald entertained next with a step dancing number followed by John Huether singing ,a sole, "Blessed Assurance". Rev. Docken showed a film of the activities and happenings at Walton and Moncrief in 1963, entitled; "What is the church"? This brought back the .happy affairs and proved most interest- ing. Mac Sholdice thanked Rev. Dockin for preparing the film. Rev. Derwyn Docken, Mrs. Jean Docken, Kristen and Mark were asked to come to the front and Mrs. Harvey Craigs read an Sunday School promotion was held during the morning service at Duff's United when the Sunday School pupils and their teachers filed into the centre pews, singing "Jesus bids us Shine", accom- panied by Mrs. Ray Huether at the piano. Attending the Grade 8 graduation dinner and dance at Upper Thames Elementary School on Wednesday evening from this community were, Karen Miller, Pam Cameron; Jeff Butson, Roger Riley, Dennis Parsons, Richard Cameron, Bob Scott and Terry Templeman. Misses Heather and Cathy McDonald, of London spent the weekend at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don McDonald. Mrs. EArl Bell of London visited on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Don Achilles and family. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Humphries, and family of London spent the holiday weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Humphries and Kim. Mr. and Mrs. Don Krick of Hamilton spent the weekend at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Ritchie. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Bennett and Joan, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Bennett spent the weekend in Windsor where they atended'the funeral of Mrs. Bennett's nephew, M 'uray Merkley a week ago Monday. Miss Vera Gardener of Toronto is visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Campbell Wey and family. Mr. and Mrs. Jery Achilles ..ad Debbie of Fergus visited on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Achilles and other realtives in the community. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Couper of Ottawa spent the holiday week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smalldon. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warwick of Owen Sound andMr. Nei McDonald spent the weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken McDonald. months. There is no fee for • the program. Unscheduled, .but supervised sports will be held at the Recreation Centre, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the young people. There are facilities for baseball, volleyball, badminton, etc. The large play park bordered' by Halifax, Winnipeg and Toronto Blvd. is having new play equipment added. Anyone available to help is asked to contact Ben Bridges. The labour has been volunteer and the chairman Mr. Bridges has outlined the plans. Two sandboxes are complete, however, more " assistance is needed for the climbing frame and side. A bottle of champagne can be yours ,for naming the park. How about West Park? Give your suggestions to Mr. and Mrs. Bridges at 4 Halifax Rd.. Summer swim program registrations are still being accepted by aquatics director Mr.Harold Whitlock. Specialty classes are popular and are offered for the summer. Rain or shine programs go on at the Indoor Pool. The water and temperature is always controlled. Many young people have found the lobby and snack area a friendly drop-in centre. For information call the pool at 482-3544. Staffa home this past week , after several months in Australia and on the continent. Mr. and Mrs. George Vivian and family left Friday for a holiday in the Western Provinces. Mrs. Jim Norris, Judy and Garry, Brampton, visited on the weekend with Mrs. Sam Norris and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Norris and family, Garry remaining for holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cross, London, visited on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Miller.
