The ladies are getting into line also. An important and interesting event occurred in the Oddfellpw's Hall on Friday evening last. This was the —fOrmation of a Rebekah Assembly; which is a ladies' branch of the Independent Order of Oddfellows and will be called Edelweiss Lodge. The following were the officers t elected and installed: Noble Grand - Mrs. Charles Aberhart; Vice Grand - Mrs. Charles Layton; Recording Secretary - Miss Margaret Smithers (Mrs. John Sclater); Financial Secretary Miss A. Kenchen (Mrs. W. H. Golding); Treasurer - Mrs. T. G. Scott; Warden - Miss Helen Mehlab; Conductor, Miss L. Harris; Chaplain - Miss Lily Twiss fa', (Mrs". Alex McGavin); R.S.N.G. Mrs. John It. Stewart; L.S.14.6 L.S.N.G. Miss M. Stewart; R.S.V.G. - Miss Maud 'Dickson; L.S.V.G. - Miss Etta Crich. ' The new lodge has started under favourable conditions, having a good membership list and an excellent staff of officers. We hope for it a prosperous, useful career.*' The last of e;the charter mem- bers have passe on to their reward just recently - Mrs. Sclater in 1973 and Mrs. McGavin in 1974. Both served their lodge and community well and both were past district deputy presi- dents. The following applications for membership were received: Mrs. Helen Aberhart, Mrs. .flattie Layton,. Scott, T. G. Scott and J. A. Stewart were admitted by withdraw] cards (from Gpderich Lodge). These minutes were signed by Helen Aberhart, noble grand and H. R. Scott, acting secretary. . Although it does not appear in ,the minutes nor in the write up in the Expositor it is known that Edelweiss Rebekah Lodge No. -' 117 was instituted by Goderich Lodge, No. 89, perhaps in the .aff ernoon preceding the meeting during which officers were elected and installed. Edelweiss, the name chosen, means, "noble white". It was a pdrennial plant which grows high • up in the Alps Mountains. About six inches high, it is the national emblem of Switzerland and is prbtected by law. The number of past noble, grands is too numerous to men- tion (60 in ail); the following are past district deputy presidents: Mrs. Hattie (Chas4 Layton; Mrs. Mary (Wm,) Crich; Mrs, Anne, (Stewart) Henderson; Mrs. Lillian (Tviiss) McGavin; Mrs, Minnie (Rankin( Hug,gard; Mrs. Jean (Smith( Wanless; Mrs. Georgine (Smith) Gropp; Miss Jean ScOtt (twice); Mrs, Ethel (Alec) Boyes; Mrs. Lillian (Jos.) Scott; Mrs, Mae Dorrance; Mrs. 'Ha porrance; Mrs. Mae Hillebrecht and Mrs. L. Grunirnett. Edelweiss Lodge has always supported all worthwhile, causes, especially charitable. For many years money has been sent to the IOOF and Rebekah Home at Barrie. Annually the lodge was sent barrels packed full of jars of fruit. ,Money has been raised in aid of the Rid Cross and Hospital Auxiliary.
