18—THE !VON EXP6SITOR, JUNE 26, 1975
By Leo Hagan
The Father Stephen Eckert
- Council, • No. -5289, Knights of
Columbus was founded 'on May
6th, 1962. The name chosen' was
in honor of the late Father
Stephen Eckert, a CapuChin •
Monk, who died in 1923 after a
life of Missionary Service among
United States Negroes. Father
Eckert was born • in McKillop
Township near Seaforth and.
Dublin . •
The council was formed
because many members in the
area were unable to take an active
part in KilrOy Council, Stratford,
due to distance and missed out on
many functions and projects of
that council. The State Board and
the Supreme Office realizing this
felt a new council be organized in
the Seaforth area. A special
meeting was held in the Seaforth
legion hall on March 12, 1962,
under the direction of Clifford
McLelland, Insurance Represen;,-
tative for Ontario; Leo Carty,
representing the Supreme Offiee,
New Haven, Conn.; Cecil Tufts,
Grand Knight; Kilroy Council,
Stratford and Daniel Creighton,
District Deputy of District 9,
London. Members attending were
from Goderich, Zurich, Clinton,
Dublin, St. Columban and
Seaforth.
The organization, meeting was
held in the same hall on May 6th,
1962. Prior to the nominations a
First Degree was exemplified,
when 18 candidates joined the
Order. Nominations were under
the direction of District Deputy
Dan Creighton, assisted by Grand
Knight, Cecil Tufts. Following
were the officers of the new
council: Grand Knight, John
L.Malone; Deputy Grand Knight,
Dr. Martin W. Stapleton;
Chancellor, Lloyd Bedard;
Recorder, Leo J. Hagan;
Treasurer, Clayton Looby; Advo-
cate, Frank Sills, Jr.; Warden,
D'Orlean Sills; Inside • Guard,
John Schoonderwoerd; Outside -
Guard, Antoine Garon; Trustees:
Charles Rau, W. J. Burns,
Rayniond, Murray..
In its' ye,ars,Father Stephen
Eckert Council has demonstrated
its adherence to the Order's
principles of Charity, Unity,
Brotherly, Love and Patriotism.
Despite the hardships of the first ,
Father Stephen
Eckert, a Capuchin
monk who was
missionary to U.S.
negroes. .
few years, meeting in the Legion
Hall, then the cramped quarters
at Seaforth Memorial Arena, the
foresight of the executive when
• they formed the Seaforth Colum-
bian Board and purchased the
St.Columban School'''under the
Chairmanship of Charles Rau,
has paid off in that the council
now 'has its own beautifnl
quarters, which all are proud to
be a part of the Father Stephen
Eckert., Council.
In its progress, the mortgage
has been paid off; scholarships
are presented annually; many
charitable donations are
contributed each year; sponsor an
`annual Separate School' hockey
tournament for various grades in
the council area; were the original
organizers of Brotherhood Night,
which has become an annual
event and in which Lodges,
Service Clubs, • Church
representatives' and others
participate. Many degrees have
been exemplified here and the
Coundil Rooms have been made
available to the Dean Egan
Assembly of the Fourth Degree.
