The next Sills to enter the business was the eldest son of
Frank Sills — D'Orlean more often known as Der. He
came into the business. in 1934 and is now in partnership
with his brother Frank C. J. The latter became permanently
part of the business in 1947.
Jim, son of Frank C. J. became an integral part of the
business in 196&and over the years his sisters Anne, Mary,
Jane, Margaret and Joan have formed an important part of
the clerking staff of the store. We have enjoyed a host of
loyal staff members in the business over the years — almost,
too many to mention. Everybody connected with the
business has been proud to serve the community during the
term of 5 generations and we wish to congratulate Seaforth
on its 100th birthday as an incorporated Town. We have
every confidence in the future of the Town and, sincerely
hope that we will be able to serve the community for many
years to come.
GEO: A. SILLS & SONS
During the early 1850's Daniel Lloyd Sills carried on a
Grain, Drug and Hardware S tore in Brucefield. Here
George A. Sills was born in 1854. At the age of sixteen he
came to Seaforth and shortly thereafter got a job clerking for
Johnson Bros. Hardware. He stayed with them for 20 years
before starting up a hardware business in partnership with
William Murdie. After 7 years Mr. Murdie left for Lucknow
and the business of Geo. A. Sills and Sons was formed.
George A. continued as a member until he died in 1943 — 73
years in the hardware business.
Frank S. Sills, the eldest son, entered the business in the
late nineties and was connected with the business for, the
next 66 years. Charles P. Sills came in not long after Frank
and stayed 7 years before leaving for University and a
degree in Engineering. Joseph, the youngest son, entered
for a short time and then left to become a professional
hockey player.
