tried to straighten out Vitt's
complicated personal finances, •
befriended the poet and hymn-
writer William Cowper, and
freely gave advice ' on the
country's problems during and
after the rebellion of . the
American colonies, the French
,
revolution, arid the Napoleonic
Wars.
In 1796 George III very
reluctantly elevated Robert Smith
to the peerage as Baron
Carrington, first for Ireland which
did not automatically convey
membership in the House of
Lords, and a year later for
England which did. The King,
like most of the so-called better
classes of his day, considered that
the Lords should be reserved for
gentlemen wfohad inherited titles
or owned vast landed estates or
had served with great distinction
as high-ranking officers in the
armed forces. It was no place for
upstarts who had dirtied their
hands in trade. yet Pitt was so
insistent that the King made An.,
exception for Robert Smith, the
only one he tolerated during his
reign of sixty years.One
rhymster, referring to Lord
Carrington, wrote, "Billy Pitt
made Smith a peer, and took the
pen from off 'his ear."
The present or sixth Baron
Carington, K.C..M.G., M.C., a
distant cousin of Tuckersmith,
served in the Grenadier Guards
during World War II and then in
the House of Lords as
Parliamentary Secretary to the
Minister of A Oriculture and of
Defence, as High Commissioner
for the United, Kingdom in
Australia,, as First Lord of the
Admiralty and, since the defeat
of the Heath Government, as
leader of the Opposition in the
-House of Lords. He is, or has
been, a director of Amalgamated
Metal Corporation, Hambro's
Bank, Barclay's Bank, the
Australia and New Zealand
Banking Group, and of Cadbury-
Schweppes. His name
occasionally appears in Canadian
newspapers for he is chairman of
the Conservative Party in Britain.
Another distant relative " of
Tuckersmith is Sir Henry Abel-
Smith who married the daughter
of the Earl and Countess of
Athlone, The Earl was a brother
of QUeen Mary and served as
Governor-General of Canada
1941-6. The Countess of Athlone,
Princess Alice; is a direct
descendant of George III.
Consequently Sir Henry
Abel-Smith, a distant relative of
Tuckersmith's, is a cousin
through his wife of both the
Queen and the ,Duke 'of
Edinburgh. But family trees are
too complicated, life is too short,
and this article is already too
long, to go into further details of a
family as numerous and
prominent as that of Tuckersmith.

Sale of old bachelors
(Continued from Page 15)
And if we say "Daddy's Boy" he will answer the call.
Still another I've got that sets a good pace
And he's fond of the maids is this same Narley Case.
I have 'other ones too, Brown McRougall and Jack
And once you have bought them you won't give them back;
And then there's Fred Cardno who keeps a bake shop
Who will serve you with dainties both stale fresh and hot.
There are others here too, some slick And some shaggy
And one keeps a store and his nicknatfe is Aggie
Then comes Hardware Billy and he says it's a shamey
The way the girls stare at ...him betause he looks gamey. '
And now comes a few that look meek hut are cross
But the sweetest of all is Dr. Hugh Ross.
Here's another so swell, in face he is ravish
He wears a nose glass and they call him MacTavish.
But the one that is musical, clever and racey
The one the girls cry for is Lauder DeLacey.
So maids here's the list, some young ones, some older,
And I pray that we each lug one home on our shoulder.
