The old Seaforth Highlanders band led the Patriotic Day Parade down Seaforth's Main St.
in the summer of 1940.
Were you at the Federation picnic in 1945?
Does anyone remember when
the Huron Federation of
Agriculture had. their annual
picnic" at the Lions Park in
Seaforth. The date was June 14,
1945, the weather was lovely and
more than 4,000 people jammed
their way into the park.
This information comes from a
pageiof pictures and a story about
the big picnic which appeared the
next day in the Stratf and Beacon
Herald which ,vas loaned to the
Expositor by Dorothy Scarrow of
Seaforth. Among those in the
photos on the 30 year old page are
the winners of a race for girls six
anti under --Cleo Bowman,
Seaforth; Annie Sinclair and
Elaine Bell, Kippen.
Gordan Papple, square dance
caller, is pictured along with the
winning dancers in a square
dance competition, Velma Scott,
Archie Smith, Dorothy and Jean
Agar, James Nash, Helen Lear,
John Henderson and George
Hildebrand.
Winners of the boys eight and
under race, seen pulling the
thistles from their feet, are Grant
McGregor and Gerald and Jack
Bell; all of Kippen.
Old time fiddlers who
competed in a contest are also
shown. They are Ross Mann,
Clinton, Frank Harburn, Staffa
and their piano player, Mrs. Bert
Irwin, Seaforth.
Three boys who won the twelve
and under race back in that sunny
June day in 1945 were Donald
Riley, Brussels, Joe Malone,
R.R.5, Seaforth and Jack
Caldwell, Kippen.
Where are they now? A
surprising number of them are
still in Seaforth and area.
