PIPING IN THE-CURLERS—Piper Peter Malcolm
and his unidentified friend piped the curlers around.
the rink at a bonspiel at the Seaforth Curling Club
some years ago. Following the pipers is the longest
standing curling club member, Ned Boswell.
The Seaforth Curling Club has
been in continual operation since
1876 when it received, its charter
from the Ontario Curling
Association. Unfortonately, the
records prior to 1890 have been
lost 'but complete records since
then are still held by the Club.
These records show that the 14th
annual meeting was held at the
CoMmercial Hotel where eight
skips were .elected by ballot as
was then the custom. This would
intricate that there were then
'some 32 active members. Prior to
4951 all curling was done on
natural ice, mostly on the surface
of the skating rink which was
located on the property ,now
occupied by the Ball-Macaulay
Ltd. lumber business.
Each member owned his own
pair of curling stones and when a
team went out of town to a
bonspiel, this entailed
..considerable difficulty in
transportation. Moreover each
pair of stones was a different
weight and shape.
The Community Centre was
built prior to 1950 and when the
skating rink was sold the Curling
Club rented ice time from it for a
few years. In order that the ,Club
could hold property legally, it was
re-organized in 19531 and the
present rink was built.
Arrangements were made with
the Community Centre to _supply
the freezing facilities for he ice
surface in the new rink. Up until
this time the membership was
fairly static but since then it has
steadily increased and now
consists of 175 members, men
and women, from the Seaforth,
Clinton, Dublin and Mitchell
areas.
Eventually, in 1959 the Club
purchased 33 pairs of matched
stones from the well known
makers in Scotland and this has
added greatly to the enjoyment of
the game. Club competitions are
in progress almost every night
with periodical bonspiels open to
other clubs. At some of the more
important bonspiels it is n dt
uncommon to parade the players
around the rink before the game,
led by a Piper and his bagpipes.
The Club is well supplied with
four sheets of playing ice;11•Mple
locker robins and 444414194104,- lounge suitablefor Club' banquets
.and dancing.
In general the'5eafortil distriCt
is greatly favored bY.Ingving sub;
an agreeable_facility available,
Seaforth and its Curling Club
members will have itmethhig, to'
be very proud of next year, as in
1976, The Seaforth Curling auk
will celebrate its 100th
pniversary. It •represents 100
years of continuous activity which
not too many clubs Pan boast of
even though the. curling was, not
always carried on in the same
building. Special plans will no
doubt be made' hi, commemorate
this anniversary and all members
will have the opportunity to
participate.
That curling is' increaseing in
populirity is.shostt by increasing
numbers of younger 'people
playing the game. There is no
doubt that television covereage of
Canadian and world competition
is' partly responsible for the great
strides ziurlingh 'ha's made in
recent years.
