Water rates
are doubled
After July 1, water rates will
double and Seaforth residents will
pay $60 rather than the $30 they
were paying previously.
As in 1969, a request to triple
the water rate has resulted in its
doubling.
Council approved doubling the
water rate, at the last regular
council meeting.
At that time they send back a
request for approval to issue a
debenture for $250,000 to the
Public Utilities Commission for
firm costs.
The debenture is to help Update
the water system, install meters
in all commercial establishments
and connect the new Brantford
well into the system.
Last year engineering fees cost
the P.U.C. $6,000 which 'was
"fairly steep" P.U.C. manager
Walter Scott said. Now they have
hired the same "firm, James F. M
acLaren Ltd, to confirm the PUC's
figures. peter Sawyer,
representing the firm, had
already said the figures were on
the low side, he said.
If the water rate had been
tripled the rate a few years ago
when the PUC suggested it, then
the PUC wouldn't need to issue a
debenture and could 'have
proceeded on improving the
stystem in stages, Mr. Scott said.
The dilemma seems to be as
Mr. Scott said: "How do you pa)
back $250,000? when council has
only doubled the rate. "I don't
want rates to go up either," he
said.
Before the Ontario Municipal
Board approves a debenture, an
engineering firm must confirm
the figures , Mr.Scott said.
With the doubling, Mr. Scott
said the town will soon be in the
"same ball park". "We won't
have capital as we need it," he
said.
There are a lot of costs that go
along with installing sewers and
town residents will be pdying for
one way or the other, he said.
