Deficiency payment for cows
(by Adrian Vos)
Ton upon ton of seed grain is
going int o the soil at this time
and every right thinking farmer is
' optimistic that this will be the
year of high yields and at the
same time high prices. He has to
think that way or he will get
discouraged and give up. It
•doesn't work very often like that
however, for if yield is high in our
country, it usually is the same in
other grain producing countries
and we are faced with an
over-supply, which in turn has a
depressing effect on prices.
Despite the cries of those that
are really concerned about
feeding the unfortunates of this
world, high yields and -high
supplies do not avert starvation.
The Trice of one ton of wheat for
instance, even -if it is way below
our productiOn cost, is in many
cases more than the breadwinner
in some countries earn in a whole
year. So if they could buy it, it
would still leave their families
starving on an insufficient
amount' of low protein rations
with nothing left for clothing and
housing and birth-control
devices.
An answer would in many cases
be to supply them with knowhow,
quality seed and fertilizer as well
as simple hand operated
machinery and irrigation
systems. In that case they could
often feed their families and sell
surpluses to their own country
men for clothing and housing.
If at the same time we give
their countrymen grain , at no or
little cost, it ruins their internal
market and our well intentioned
gesture will do more harm than

For the period December 14,
• 1974 to April 30, 1975, they may
claim on 5 per cent of their herd
sold for slaughter, provided not
more than 2 per cent were
slaughtered in any one month.
Small herd owners of forty cows
or less may claim on two cows.
The national weighted average
good. This type of help should be
given, but only in emergencies
arising out of natural disasters.
The cry of some vegetarian
organizations to condenin the
eating of meat because that takes
away grain from the starving in
the world•is therefore completely
irresponsible.
Even if no more grain was tfed
to beef and hogs and poultry, it
wouldn't put an ounce of bread on

'BanglaDesh. Dr. Bruce Taylor, an
animal scientist at the University
of Arizona has come up with some
interesting figures on beef.
A ton of corn contains 160 lbs.
of cereal protein. This ton
produces 112 lbs. of animal
protein. If you convert this in
utilized protein by the human
body, it comes out exactly the
same at 90 lbs. I would rather eat
meat than corn. How about you?
price for D1, D2, D3,. D4 cows for
the period November 16, 1974 to
April 30, 1975 was $18.13 per
hundredweight. Thie $5.08 pay-
ment to producers brings the
price up to the support price of
$23.21, established under the
program.
For those eligible for claims,
application forms are available at
the Ontario Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food offices, packing
plants and sale yards.
Sale bills are requested and it is
necessary that they be marked
SL, signifying cows were sold for
slaughter.
It is also necessary for a
provincial or federal official to
certify claims before forwarding
them to Ottawa.

Profits from milk prodnettOn
depend largely on good quallt)r
hay, silage and pasture. If you fill
the barn and silo successfully
with high quality forage, feed
bills will be. lower and production
will be satisfactory. If forage is of
poorquality or supply is limited,
one wilt have to buy more feed or
milk production will drop result-
ing in less income, W,
Broadsworth, Huron County's
Associate Ag. Rep says.
The significantly higher prices
of grain and protein supplements
during the last two years may well
continue as the demand for grain
to feed the world's population will
not let up in the near future,
anyway. Therefore, there is a
need to harvest more nutrients
required for milk production from
forage crops.
Stage of maturity at cutting
time is a major factor determining
nutritive' value of forages. One
should aim to cut legumes at the
1/10 bloom or earlier stage.
Good alfalfa has about half
stems and half leaves. An acre
that produces four tons of dry hay
a year produces two tons leaves
and two tons stems. During
'Ontario's agriculture ministry
is unable to expand its program to
send city teen-agers to farms for
summer visits because there are
not enough farmers willing to
take them, Agriculture Minister
William Stewart said.
Two of every three young
persons applying for the program
this summer will ' refused
admission to the ministry's junior
agriculturist program, he said.
There were more than 600
applicants but only 200 farmers
were willing to participate.
Mr. Stewart was responding to
a question from Murray Gaunt
(L-Huron-Bruce) during debate
on 1975-76 budget estimates of
the ministry.
24 rabies cases
in Huron so far
Already 24 cases of rabies have
been reported in Huron County in
1975, Dr. W. J. Thompson of the
Heath of Animals Branch of the
Department of Agriculture in.
Seaforth says.
Rabies is a virus that has
continually struck fear into the
hearts of parents because it is
usually fatal.
Last year there were 39 con-
firmed cases of rabies among
animals, which was a decrease

So far there has been no known

get rabies from their pets that in
turn often get the virus from a
wild animal.
For this reason, the Health of
