Status of
women • important
to nurses
"The status of women is not
only a social issue, it is a nursing
issue too", said Adele Herwitz,
Executive Director of the
International Council of Nurses.
Although the nursing profession
is attracting more men, it is still
predominately a woman's
profession and "many of the
nursing profession's continuing
problems are a reflection of the
role traditionally accorded to
women", declares Miss Herwitz.
This has affected, for example,
salary levels for nurses,
recognition of the need for
university education for nurses
and the need for nurse
participation in policy-and-
decision making in health
matters.
1CN's focus for International
Women's Year will be the
promotion of equality in every
respect between men and women
as this affects the nursing
profession and as this affects the
nursing and health care available
to ail members of society.
Members of the Registered
Nurses' Association of Ontario,
which marks its 50th Anniversary
this year, are also members of the
Canadian Nurses' Association'
and International Council of
Nurses.

Kindergarten
has assembly
at Hullett
On May 14, Miss Adams and
the kindergarten classes one and
two presented their assembly. 0
Canada was sung followed by
class one singing a song about
spring. Class two then presented
their version of a rhythm band
song. Next, class two sang a song
followed by a dance by class one.
A song was acted out about
Goldilocks and the Three Bears,
Then both classes joined together
for one last song. God Save the
Queen • was sung to end the
assembly.
At the recent meeting of Huron
Unit of the Canadian Cancer
Society held in Seaforth,
members listened to a panel
discussion on the duties of the
Planning, Development and
Nominations Committee.
Sitting in on the panel was the
Southwestern District Chairman
of that committee, Charlie Duffin
of Thorndale, and John McKay,
Sarnia, President of
Southwester, Chester Archibald,
President, and Mrs. Helen
Davies, P.D.N. chairman of
Huron Unit. A film produced by
Ontario Division was used to
introduce • the subject, and
discussion followed concerning
the importance of the committee,
and the necessity of a knowledg-
agle chairman and vice-chairman
to recruit vital, interested and
dedicated officers for the Unit.
The importance of the
committee in relation to Planning
and .Development was also
stressed. The Service to Patients
Committee carries out
widespread and very worthwhile
work, but the Education,
Commemoration Funds and
Campaign personnel are equally
important. Mr. Duffin sta ted
"The roll of the Society is
changing. Don't just drift, go out
and get people interested and
involved".
During the business session the
committee reports pointed up just
how much is being accomplished.
Ross McDaniel, campaign
chairman, complimented all
Branch chairmen and their
canvassers for their united
efforts, having raised to date
$17,423.58. Hopefully we will be
able to reach our objective of
$29,500.00 for 1975.
The Annual Dinner Meeting
will be held on September 29th at
the White Carnation,
Holmesville, with Ron Calhoun of
Thamesford as guest speaker,
Tickets are already available to
the public, and • the president
hopes for a good attendance.
