Tuning farm engines can save fuel Farm gasoline and diesel engines in Ontario use over 100 million gallons of fuel per year. A small reduction by each engine could result in subst antial savings, suggest' Agricultural Engineers of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Visible black exhaust from a diesel engine, or black deposits on the inside of gasoline engine exhaust pipes, are both indicators that fuel is being wasted. A diesel engine that produces black smoke is getting too little air or too much (or poorly vaporized) fuel, or the engine requires major repairs. A simple check of the air:intake system will determine if obstructions exist. A qualified diesel technician can test the injectors for spray pattern and vaporization, and the pump for overfti el I ing Carburetor adjustments on gasoline engines are much simp- ler and can often be made by the operator. The operator's manual usally provides guidelines. 'Care must be taken to ensure that the fuel to air ratio is not foo low (too lean). • The result will be SATURDAY May 17 6:00 "Death Sentence" - Colm O'Shea, Cioils Leachman, Laurence Lucinbill. 9:00 "Only with Married Men" - Colm O'Shea, David Birney, Michelle Lee. 11:45 "The Looking Glass War" - Chris Jones, Pit Degermark. Spark plugs, ignition points, and condenser should be adjusted or replaced as recommended by the engine manufacturer. • Many farm equipment dealers have a dynamometer which they use to check tractor horsepower. M the same time they can monitor fuel consumption with a flowmeter. This provides an ideal opportunity. to fihe tune the engine for fuel economy, without sacrificing available horsepower. A spring tune-up for your tractor will not only assure you a trouble-free planting season, but also help to conserve some of our natural resource - petroleum.
