The anticipated provincial
election hasn't been called yet,
but already there's a candidate
for one party's nomination in
Huron County. HeA . Philip
Walker, 40 , of Grand end who
is running for the NDP
nomination. Mr. Walker said the
N.D.P. nomination date has not
yet been set.
Mr. Wallcer's family owned and
operated 'Oakwood Inn and Golf
Club in Grand Bend until it was
sold to London interests headed
by Peter Ivey last year.
Mr,: Walker, who has a BA
from UWO, is married and has
one child.
In a statement announcing his
candidacy, Mr. Walker says
"thirty-two• years of one party
rule in Ontario has created an
increasing desire for change
among`' people." He cites
increasing unemployment due
partly to foreign domination in
both the raw materials and
manufacturing sectors • of the
economy" and "urban crowding
and rural depopulation" as some
„of the problems facing the
province.
"The gradual but more or less
continuous decay of agriculture is
a particularily serious problem in
Huron County", he says.
Seaforth
Manor
Happenings
Seaforth Minor residents were
treated to a fine evening of music
on Wednesday, April 23rd at 7:30
p.m. when a mixed senior choir
under the direction of Miss Lois
Legg of Clinton accompanied by
Miss Louise Lovett at the piano
sang a variety of numbers by
Rodgers and Hammerstein. Mr.
Frank Sills was master of
ceremonies and by special
request sang two solo numbers.
The choir also obliged and sang
several old time favourites with
the residents joining in. Our
sincere thanks to all who took part
and as one of our senior residents
commented "I wish they would
have sang all night". Courtesy
remarks were extended to the
group and a social half hour
followed.
SHORTS FROM THE YUKON
Talk about inflation. During the
Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 men
paid $5 for an onion and $15 for
an old newspaper stained with
bacon grease which was used as a
substitute for window glass.
