Mayor Betty Cardne told the
group that Mr. Williams had been
named Clerk in March 1965 just a
month before she had been
named to fill the council vacancy.
During thb ten years, during
which she had been 'associated
with him she gained a particular
appreciation of his sincerity and
ability. "He did many extra jobs"
she said ' which saved the town
many dollars."
Mrs. Cardno said Mr.
Williams was always willing to
help. out and as an example
described what had, happened
Th-Urgday, the day for which the
event originally had been
planned.
When the storm prevented
Robert Franklin, the new clerk,
from reaching the town office,
Mr. Williams came in to help out.
The only problem, she said, was.
that the Williams dinner, planned
secret as Mr. Williams-answered
a series of calls .from guests
asking whether the dinner was
postponed. -
. recalled his early associations
Chairman Hildebrand too
recalled his early assocaitions
with the Williams family . who
when they first came to town were
neighbors.
Accepting the gift of a wall
clock, presented by Deputy Reeve
Dale, Mr. Williams said how he
enjoyed his years in Seaforth and
how much he appreciated the
work done by those arranging the
event ;the council committee and
. Mrs. E.G.Nelson of the town
office staff. "I'm really pleased" '
he said.
Mr. Hildebrand introduced
members of the Williams family,
son Gary, 'who spoke briefly, and,
his wife of Lon-don and daughter
Arlene. Mrs. Ken McCowan and
her husband of Brucefield.
Mayor Cardno brought
greetings from. Huron MPP Jack
Riddle and others who spoke
briefly included Reeve Elgin

Teenagers in control
What percentage of teenagers
have never smoked more than a
handful of cigarettes in their
livec'se?nSturPrise. The answer is 75
pet
An extensive 1974 'survey
conducted, by the U.S.
government's ' National
Clearinghouse on Smoking and
Health also found that only 15.8
percent of teenagers are regular
smokers. The percentage of girls
who samtoke has inched up.to that
for boys.
What factors influence
decisions about smoking? For
teenagers the most important
concern is ' "control of my
future." Most teenagers want to
decide themselves what kind of a
person to become and to shape
their 'own lives. The next most
important factor is awareness of
the effects of smoking on health.
The third most significant factor,
the survey showed, is a concern
for nonsmokefs' rights. There is
a growing feeling among
teenagers as well 'as adults that
people who do not smoke bave the
right to breathe clean air which is
not polluted with cigarette smoke.
Here are some of the
fascinating findings:
- 77 percent think cigarette
smoke is a • form of air
pollution.
-87 percent feel smoking harms
teenagers
-72 percent disagree that low-
tar and nicotine cigarettes are,
•
-56 percent are bothered
because many adults can't
stop smoking
Personal -
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Taylor
and family, Mr. .and
Mrs. R.M.Scott have returned
home after a two week vacation in
Hawaii at Oahu "and' Maui.
It just seems as if all teenagers
everywhere are smoking their
heads off. 'they aren't. And they
have good reasons not 'to.
To find out mere about the
reasons why most people,
including teenagers, don't
smoke, contact your Christmas
Seal Association. It's a matter of •
life and breath,

The ,Scouts were in camp.
During an inspection the camp
director found an umbrella neatly
rolled inside the bedroll of a
small Scout. As an umbrella was
not listed as a necesSary'item, the
director asked the'boy to explain.
"Sir," answered the boy with a
weary sigh. "did you ever have a
mother?"
The guy had fished all day with
no- success.Stopping by the
Market, he said to a clerk,
"Throw me five nice trout."
'Why do you want me to throw
them tO you?" asked the clerk.
"So I can tell my wife I caught
them." said the fellow. "I'm a
poor fisherman, but I'm not a
liar.-
