On Jantiary 2, 1915 fou'r
Uruline Sisters from Chatham
arrived in Dublin to begin a
period of teaching service to the
Dublin Community. At the end of
June, 1975, the four Sisters who
now reside in the convent nos-
tagically will close the doors of
this house which has served as a
centre of religious dedication by
the Uruline Sisters for more than
half a centuray.
The four Sisters who pioneered
this era arrived in Dailitt -dhring
one of its famous snowstorms.
They were Mother Cecilia.
Mother Isabel. Mother Dolores
and Mother Baptiste. Two were
to teach in the adjoining High
School and two in the elementary
school across the street. Since the
convent- was not yet ready for
occupancy as cold weather pre-
vented the plaster from drying,
the Sisters were temporarily
housed at the home of the pastor,
Rev. Thomas-Noonan. When the
Sisters moved into 'the convent.
two new members arrived to join
them -- Mother Benedict as a
music teacher and Mother
Monica as a housekeeper.
Mother Benedict's life of service
was only begun and within two
weeks sudden illness caused 'her
death. She offered the sacrifice of,
her life for the success of the
Ursuline a0ostolate.
In September, 1925. two Sisters
Mother Angeline and Mother
Dorothy, began the Ursuline
teaching service in St. Columban.
After more titan half a century
of teaching high school the
Ursulines closed the doors' of
Dublin Continuation School in
June. 1969. At that! time small
high, schools were being closed ip
favour of tht larger district high
schools. The work of the Sisters
since then has been totally
directed to teaching in .the
elementary schools in Dublin and
St. Columban.
Throughout she yew's there
have been as many as twelve to
fifteen Sisters in residence at one
time. Today, however, only four
Sisters occupy thesainvent resi-
dence. two of whom teach in the
schools. It was considered an
extravagance to have so few

convent in Stratford can provide
residence for the Sisters who will
continue to teach in the area it
was decided by the Urs'illine
administration in Chatham to
close the residence at the end of
June, 19/p.
In making this decision,
Mother Dominica expressed her
feelings and those of the General
Council in these words to the
pastor, Reverend Gordon "I
am grateful for all the years that
our Sisters have spent in the
service of the people of Dublin
and 1 am sorry that this step has
to he taken now. However, I
know that you and the people of
Dublin will understand and
accept this decision.—
A reunion day will be held on
'Sunday, May 18th to meet again
the Sisters who have served here
in the past and are able to return.
