My mother she's so good to me,
Ef I wee good as I could be,
I couldn't bo as good --no sir—
Cau'E any boy be good as her!
She Loves me when I'll glad or sad;
She loves rile when I'm good er bad;
An' what's a funicet thing she says
She levee )tie when she punishes.
I don't like her to punish um—
That don't hurt—but it hurts to see
Her oryii--then I cry; and then
We both cry and be good again.
She loves inc when she outs and sews
My little cloak and Sunday olothee;
An' when my pa Domes home to tea
She loves hire most as much as me.
She laughs and tells him all field,
An' grabs me up and pats my head,

Lion -Taming.
There are tamers and trainers. A
tamer is simply a man of unlimited
.nerve. A trainer has nerve and judg-
ment. My friend tells me that a
`trainer can teach a lion about as many
tricks as can be taught a dog. Some.
'times the lion himself will unuonsctous-
ly suggest a new trick. "I had to
train four lions to jump a gate. One
of them was so stubborn that 1 deter-
lmined to leave hist to the last. When
I cause to him he was lying iu a corner.
I began striking him. .He @prank up
and came toward me. He had a
wicked look, so I hit him a sharp blow
from below on the end of the nose
with my cane, the only weapon I ever
take into the den. The blow stung
him so it turned him around, and, as
if to escape another, he jumped up to
the bare and remained standing with
bis fore feet upon one of theca. He
gave me a look which said plenty, I'll
stop here if you don't do it agate. He
looked superb standing there drawn
up to his full hsigut. So I sot duwn
on the gate, lit a cigarette, and kept
bim in the position till I had finished
It trained the other lions iu the net,
and a fine appearance the four made
standing against the bars.
"Another friend of mine was in the
audience when a lioness killed a trainer
at the Istria Hippodrome. She had
been trained to approach him from
behind, rise ou her hind legs and place
bor front paw upon his shoulders. Silo
did so this time, Then quietly thrust-
ing her dead over his shoulder, she
seized hire by the throat and literally
tosit•d bite over her hack. 1ha other
lions in the den fell upon hiin, and
though he was rescued from the den,
be died within an hour."
',asked the trainer why h'i never
armed himself with more than a cane.
Tamers rarely did, he said. There
was no use. A lion's attack was like
a thunderbolt. One bite, one blow
'with the claw was deadly. The men
stationed outside with carhh„hs and
red•hot irons are there only to drive
the lion off the body of his victim, so
that he can be got out of the den
alive, and the spectators saved the
horror of seeing him devoured.—From
