RUBY
'CONSOLIDATED BALANCE SHEET
as at December 31, 1974
"The price of wisdom is
above rubies," so said Job
in the Bible, implying that
even this variety of the
corundum species was ex-
traordinarily valuable and
highly esteemed. The
superlatives that ha ve been
used to describe ruby and
ig to • praise its virtues are
seemingly without end. Irt
Sanskirt this stone was
more valued than any
ni other: "ratnaraj" (king of
ti precious stones) and
• "ratnanayaka"(leader of
precious stones). In our
h contemporary society,
0: Ruby still holds a position
of pre-eminence and finds
• wide use as the July
rgi birthstone, as it has for
many generations.
A multitude of legends
andstrange beliefs
surrounded the ruby
ancient times. Among other
things, it was thought that
the wearer of a ruby was
blessed with- 'health,
wealth, wisdom, and out
standingsuccess in affairs
of the heart. This, noble
gem has always been a
favorite adornment for
royal crowns.
Only transparent corun-
dum of medium-light to
dark tones of red to purple:
red hues is properly called
ruby. Very light hues of red
are called pink sapphire.
The finest grades of rubies
are red or very slightly
purplish red of high
intensity found almost ex-
elusively in Burma.
Thailand and Ceylon also
g produce gem quality
F. rubies. Corundums of ruby
colour, displaying distinct
04 asterism are called Star
Rubies. Although
corundum has bean found
in many places, not all
corundum is of gem
quality.
